The Secret Space Programs: Biggest Cover-Up Of All Time?

From New Dawn Special Issue Vol 12 No 2 (Apr 2018)

Do covert space programs utilising extra-terrestrial technology exist? Are we being subjected to a massive psychological operation?

The following examines alleged cover-ups on a huge scale, two vastly different interpretations of unusual aerial phenomena – UFOs – connected to ‘secret space programs’. The so-called facts of these cover-ups are hard to fathom but if true constitute a conspiracy of mammoth proportions.

The first involves the earth-based elite and its military, intelligentsia, security and space operations apparatus. The second, the claims and disclosures of various individuals and ‘whistleblowers’ on ‘beyond top secret’ cooperation with extra-terrestrials.

When the Pentagon’s X-37B space plane first was announced to the world – a deliberately engineered event – the public was fascinated by its appearance.

‘The Pentagon’s mysterious X-37B space plane sets new orbit record’ by Nick Whigham reads an article appearing on News.com.au in March 2017. “For the past 678 record-breaking days, a large robotic plane owned by the US Air Force has been floating around space in low-earth orbit.”

The US Air Force’s X-37B Orbital Test Vehicle 4 is seen at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center Shuttle Landing Facility in Florida, May 2017. There was no hiding the fact that the X-37B is part of a secret space program.

“Despite the unique accomplishment, the space plane remains shrouded in secrecy and the goals and purpose of the mission are a mystery to the public – fuelling intense speculation and conspiracy theories, including concern that it is helping to usher in the weaponisation of space.”

The weaponisation of space has been a major issue for governments as far back as the 1950s. In 1957, US Air Force chief of staff Thomas White stated: “Whoever has the capability to control space will likewise possess the capability to exert control of the surface of Earth.”

In the past few decades the space race has heated up with programs and special projects developed by Russia, India, Japan, South Korea and China (Asia’s largest). Also participating are private contractors. Much of the work is top secret.

Of course, the largest player in this game of dominance is the United States government. It funds the multibillion-dollar development of experimental black aircraft at ‘Area 51’ (known as ‘Dreamland’ by the pilots who test aircraft in the restricted airspace over the base). The U-2 spy plane and the F-117 stealth fighter were developed at Area 51 under the tangled aegis of a host of secretive government departments, including the Central Intelligence Agency and the Strategic Air Command, and private contractors.

Space Program central – Area 51 can be seen in the centre alongside other US Air Force secret bases and testing grounds.

According to various whistleblowers and researchers, Area 51 is infamous for being the storage and examination point of crashed alien spacecraft (including material recovered at Roswell). It is here, they say, that military scientists have studied aliens and alien technology. Some even claim Area 51 is where meetings or joint undertakings with extra-terrestrials have taken place. More on this later.

America’s Secret Network of Space Planes & Satellites

Examples of drones and stealth aircraft developed under the protection of
    classified programs.

The US Air Force’s X-37B space plane is only one of possibly dozens of secret military satellites and craft orbiting in space. Many are designed to spy on Earth. Almost certainly others are being tested for warfare purposes.

According to astrophysicist and astronomer Jonathan McDowell, “The secret space programs, or I should say more generally the military space programs, are as big as NASA,” adding that there are about 20 to 25 “full-fledged spy satellites or other really secret vehicles” travelling above the Earth.1

The American artist, geographer and author Trevor Paglen managed to document some of the hidden reality behind the Pentagon’s classified ‘black’ budget programs. His 2010 book examined the ‘patches’ or emblems in the field of clandestine military activity. Speaking to the New York Times in 2008, Paglen remarked: “This stuff is a huge industry, I mean a huge industry. And it’s remarkable that you can develop these projects on an industrial scale, and we don’t know what they are. It’s an astounding feat of social engineering.”2

A few of the emblems in the top secret US military field, uncovered by Trevor Paglen. Includes ‘Desert Prowler’ which supposedly represents Groom Lake, aka Area 51.

It is here, in these space programs, where we detect the signs of a massive cover-up that by definition extends way beyond the bounds of the perimeter fence at Area 51.

Alongside the government-funded space research programs are the private contractors, many entangled with the military-industrial complex. The profit-driven competition between the various players drives the secrecy and deception.

Many would be surprised to learn that Amazon.com billionaire Jeff Bezos is getting into space, his company Blue Origin operating in extreme secrecy. Late last year [2017] Blue Origin sent its suborbital New Shepard rocket into space, its first test flight. He’s competing with Richard Branson’s spaceflight company Virgin Galactic in what they both predict will be the new frontier for tourism – space.

Other private US-based space companies are the well-known SpaceX owned by Elon Musk, as well as Boeing, Sierra Nevada Corporation and Orbital ATK. These companies are developing engine and rocket systems, capsules and spacecraft. Big profits are at stake. Where the secrecy breaks down is you can’t hide everything that flies in the sky or floats in space.

    Look! Up in the Sky! It’s a Bird! It’s a Plane! It’s a UFO!

It’s no secret that governments around the world have operated programs to study unidentified aerial phenomenon. Starting in 1952, Project Blue Book was one of a series of studies of unidentified flying objects (UFOs) conducted by the United States Air Force. These programs were officially ‘terminated’, but many observers posit that for obvious reasons the study of strange objects in the sky continued in a covert capacity, outsourced to unofficial non-government organisations, front groups for the Pentagon.

Howard Blum, in his book Out There: The Government’s Secret Quest for Extra-terrestrials, revealed from Freedom of Information Act requests that the US Air Force continued to catalogue and track UFO sightings, particularly a series of UFO encounters from the late 1960s to the mid-1970s that occurred at US military facilities with nuclear weapons. Blum writes that some of these official documents depart drastically from the normally dry and bureaucratic wording of government paperwork, making obvious the sense of “terror” that these UFO incidents sparked in many USAF personnel.

One of the major stories in the field of Ufology happened in 2017 – official admission there had been, in fact, a recent US government program that studied UFOs.

The Pentagon project, called the Advanced Aviation Threat Identification Program, was reportedly established in 2007 to investigate unexplained aerial phenomena that appeared to be using novel propulsive, hovering or otherwise advanced technologies.

The unveiling of the Pentagon project was uncritically embraced and circulated by some UFO enthusiasts, which was perhaps the intention of those behind the report’s release.

We heard from the former head of the Advanced Aviation Threat Identification Program, Luis Elizondo. “My personal belief is that there is very compelling evidence that we may not be alone,” Elizondo told CNN.3

The program supposedly ran from 2008 to 2012. Elizondo, highlighting one particular episode caught on video that was publicly released, said that the aerial stunts of the UFOs – such as hovering without any sign of propulsion – were beyond the reach of human technology.

He didn’t seem to be in any doubt the program had found evidence pointing to extra-terrestrials: “These aircraft – we’ll call them aircraft – are displaying characteristics that are not currently within the US inventory nor in any foreign inventory that we are aware of.”4

Is Elizondo’s admission indicative of indirect government disclosure of the existence of ETs? Or is it part of a sophisticated disinformation program designed to misdirect our attention from the experiments of the secret space program? It apparently has happened before. According to British journalist and filmmaker Mark Pilkington in Mirage Men: An Adventure into Paranoia, Espionage, Psychological Warfare, and UFOs, a shadowy organisation he dubbed “mirage men” were behind a global double bluff.

His book lays out the controversial case that the fascination and study of UFOs was instigated or encouraged by the US government trying to conceal Cold War military projects.

Pilkington says the Roswell case, when the US military recovered a “flying disc” from a ranch near the New Mexico town back in 1947, is one of the “most famous examples” of the work of the mirage men. He told online journal Sputnik: “In the early 1950s the US military was testing a lot of new technologies and it was convenient to disguise them as UFOs. It was a double bluff.”5

He declares the “UFO mythology served as a convenient cover” for classified tests. In this vein, the new admissions by Elizondo serve to restore the mystery around UFOs as alien spacecraft – not the manoeuvring of advanced technologies developed by humans.

In brief, that sums up part one of our examination of the cover-up surrounding the secret space programs. Military agencies around the world and private contractors prefer us to see UFOs instead of their experimental craft.

That, in itself, is one massive cover-up involving thousands of operatives and ‘whistleblowers’ spreading carefully planned disinformation which eventually took on a life of its own in the mythology of UFOs and alien abductions etc. The existence of this huge disinformation conspiracy is, of course, hotly disputed by those in the UFO community who have their own takes on the phenomenon – and they’re certainly not at all in agreement.

Kenneth Arnold points to one of the saucers he saw flying near Mt Ranier in 1947.

The phrase “flying saucer” gained widespread attention from the year 1947. On 24 June, civilian pilot Kenneth Arnold reported seeing nine objects flying in formation near Mount Rainier in the US state of Washington. Arnold timed the sighting and estimated the speed of the discs to be over 1,900 km/h. He described the objects flying in a saucer-like fashion, leading to newspaper accounts of “flying saucers” and “flying discs.”

Coincidentally, the unidentified flying object that crashed on a ranch northwest of Roswell, New Mexico, happened during the first week of July 1947.

This was the magic moment in time that sparked the UFO craze.

We know there was extensive interest in strange aerial phenomena and ‘aliens’ before that critical year, but it exploded in the following decades. Sighting of UFOs and reports of encounters with space beings exponentially increased, and not just in the United States. UFO organisations proliferated and documented thousands of cases. Could it all be the imagining of the gullible? All part of a massive disinformation campaign? If so, then it would be the most successful manipulation of the worldwide public imagination of all time.

The answer may be closer to a simple fact about the human mind. Once a possibility is opened in the ‘group mind’ or the collective consciousness, it tends to often manifest across the whole population. Kenneth Arnold’s flying saucers sparked a belief in the possibility something otherworldly was haunting our skies. Once we started considering that possibility we began to see the saucers and other strange things. Maybe they’ve been coming and going all along, perhaps in different guises – we just didn’t ‘see’ them.

Now that we ‘see’ them, we have to determine what they are, and more importantly, what they want. This takes us into the second aspect of the biggest cover-up of all time – how the secret space programs are connected to extra-terrestrials.

Since that fateful year of 1947, and the subsequent surge of UFO sightings and apparent alien abductions, the collective mind became inextricably focused on the idea of ETs and their possible interaction with humankind.

Over the years, dozens of apparent insiders have come out of the woodwork with stories of free energy, reverse engineered UFOs, secret human-alien hybrid colonies, antigravity, and government collaboration with various species of alien. In short, these incredible stories about the secret space program represent the second interpretation of the “biggest cover-up of all time.” As in part one, it’s a conspiracy requiring the complicity of thousands of individuals and various programs designed to misdirect our attention away from a very different ‘truth’.

Of the many figures in the UFO scene, Steven Greer has become one of the loudest and consistent voices demanding full disclosure of extra-terrestrial contact. Decades of petitioning prominent Washington lawmakers and power brokers, appearing before the US National Press Club, and producing UFO documentaries such as the recent ‘Unacknowledged’, pushed Greer firmly into the limelight as one of the main players exposing the alleged extra-terrestrial cover-up.

Greer shares a platform on this subject with others including William Tompkins (1923–2017), Bob Dean, Richard Doty, Karl Wolfe, Edgar Mitchell (1930–2016, of Apollo 14 fame) and Corey Goode. The stories told by these men – some are former insiders – don’t always line up but they all appear to fervently believe what they say.

Greer claims to have met with dozens of supposed secret space program insiders and acquired thousands of documents to back up his thesis. Greer asserts the cover-up started in the 1950s when the US government reverse engineered recovered crashed extra-terrestrial craft. The first breakthrough, says Greer, was mastering “anti-gravity.” From that point on, in the 1950s, the work went “black and the reason it went black in that era is the financial cartels did not want people to understand that we have not needed oil or gas or jet engines or these things for decades.”6 The military-industrial complex has selfishly kept hidden these technological breakthroughs because it threatens the entire house of cards “built on fossil fuels and the petrodollar system.”

Greer repeatedly urged high-ranking members of the US government to disclose what they knew about extra-terrestrials until he concluded that the pertinent information was being hidden even from the president of the United States.

As for actual aliens, Greer claims the US government “have several dozen extra-terrestrial vehicles and dozens of deceased [ET] life-forms of various races. Some are stored in an underground facility near Fort Huachuca in Arizona.”7

From this point on we enter ‘Twilight Zone’ or ‘Star Trek’ territory in the literal sense due to the strange and outlandish scenarios described by some whistleblowers and disclosure activists. The following is a brief overview of these incredible claims which, if true, would indeed constitute the “biggest cover-up of all time.”

    Alien Species & Alliances

Again, in this particular arena, there are many players, some well-known and respected for their consistency and rigour, while others seem to have built their claims from the mesh of established theories and narratives.

All agree that world governments including those of the US, Russia, China, Japan and the EU have separate secret space program alliances with various alien species. The US, Russia and China are said to have entered into independent technology-transfer treaties with rival alien species who have enmeshed Earth into a sort of ‘Star Wars’ conflict that we are told has been ongoing between extra-terrestrial civilisations for thousands, possibly millions of years.

    Michael Salla

Michael Salla is an Australian academic turned UFO researcher who maintains the popular Exopolitics.org website. He is the author of the recent book The U.S. Navy’s Secret Space Program and Nordic Extra-terrestrial Alliance.

Salla describes the existence of a Military Industrial Extra-terrestrial Complex (MIEC) and claims the world’s secret space programs are currently in touch with 17 extra-terrestrial civilisations. The growing geopolitical conflict between the US allied with the EU and the Eurasian alliance led by Russia and China is, in reality, due to these governments being subsumed into the ongoing warfare between extra-terrestrial civilisations.

Salla says the creation of the ‘Star Trek’ sci-fi TV series by Gene Roddenberry was actually based on classified information leaked about the clandestine US Navy Space Fleet. This fleet, allegedly a space program run in alliance with technologically advanced alien races including the ‘Greys’, the ‘Reptilians’ and the ‘Tall Whites’, formed the basis of ‘Star Trek’.

Some alien species apparently sought out alliances with humans because they needed certain mineral and natural resources which the Earth has in abundance. For example, the Tall White aliens are said to maintain a secret trade delegation at the Nellis Air Force Base outside Las Vegas. They are desperately in need of aluminium and titanium to feed their advanced aerospace industries.

Most sinister of all, some ET species have done a deal with Earth governments to collect human DNA resources. This explains alien abductions. There’s also claims of an alien plot to take over the planet and rule it through a new alien-human hybrid elite.

Space does not permit me to mention in detail revelations such as how Nazi Germany established secret bases in Antarctica with the assistance of various extra-terrestrials (the first UFOs were made by Nazi scientists and the technology transferred to the USA after World War II) and the breakaway civilisations on the dark side of the Moon and Mars, operated by techno-elites, essentially the people who really rule the planet.

Further stories and narratives have been revealed (or invented) but they all extend from the premise of secret space programs.

Artwork by Raphael Terra shows a UFO landing in Kim Il-Sung Square, in the North Korean capital of Pyongyang. The North Koreans have their own space agency, the National Aerospace Development Administration.

Deciphering the facts from the disinformation to discern if either side of the “biggest cover-up of all time” is true – even partially – seems an insurmountable challenge. Perhaps the truth lies somewhere in the middle – between attempts at misdirecting the general public away from clandestine aerospace experiments – and the phenomenon itself which won’t go away because too many of us keep experiencing its high strangeness.

For this article, the final word on the matter goes to the writer and researcher Micah Hanks who has studied the UFO phenomenon for many years:

“There are countless examples of military exercises and various experimental technologies being mistaken for things like extra-terrestrial vehicles and other more esoteric things. However, in recognising this fundamental truth, questions must be raised in relation to whether all reports of UFOs can merely be chalked up to mis-identification of known phenomenon (including military operations, etc), or if there are indeed foreign sources behind some reports of UFO craft…

“At the end of the day, what we’re left to try and discern is whether a majority of incidents involving unusual aerial objects can be explained by clandestine military activities (and often in the absence of reliable data, due to the secrecy surrounding such subjects).

“Thus, it becomes difficult at times for us to gauge what kinds of technology have been developed and tested over the years, versus the kinds of things that seem otherworldly, and are thus perceived as being ‘theirs’ (i.e. the aliens).

“I would nonetheless say that, if I had to guess, there is probably a lot going on behind the scenes right here on Earth, which can explain much of the weird stuff we’ve seen turn up during UFO incidents over the years. The question is, if not by virtue of the all-hallowed ‘disclosure’ idea, then how will we ever get to the bottom of what’s really going on?”8

  • Alien Abductions & the Paranormal

    Alien Abductions & the Paranormal

From New Dawn Special Issue Vol 13 No 1 (Feb 2019)

Among the most influential and widely known alien abductions is the story of what happened to Betty and Barney Hill, an American couple from Portsmouth, New Hampshire, who were reportedly abducted by extraterrestrials while driving back from a vacation in Montreal.

The couple described being taken into an alien spacecraft where strange surgical operations were performed on them. The couple could not initially remember the incident, only waking up to discover that they had travelled 35 miles without any memory of the last two hours. It was only through hypnotic regression that they recalled encountering extraterrestrial beings, characterised by disproportionately large foreheads and black opaque eyes. Although the couple returned to their normal lives, after undergoing extensive hypnotherapy they continued to discuss the incident with friends, family and UFO researchers.1

Since Betty and Barney Hill’s encounter in 1961, alien abductions have become a widespread phenomenon. A study conducted by the sociologist Dr Ron Westrum suggests that nearly four million Americans have been abducted by aliens at some point during their lifetime.2 There are many explanations for these ‘alien’ encounters: some believe they are the result of sleep paralysis, or they are part of an undisclosed military project. Nevertheless, the phenomenon remains an intriguing mystery that has yet to be fully understood.

    Paranormal Connections

Many people are unaware there is a close relationship between alien abductions and the paranormal. Dr Richard Boylan, a clinical psychologist at California State University, has studied alien abductions for several decades. In his book, Close Extraterrestrial Encounters: Positive Experience with Mysterious Visitors (1994), Boylan lists twenty characteristics associated with alien abduction, several of which include the reception of telepathic messages and the development of psychic abilities.3

Kenneth Ring, professor of psychology at the University of Connecticut, has also found that many abductees report an increased sensitivity to electromagnetic fields, enhanced information-processing capacity, and the development of psychic abilities.4 It is also common for abductees to experience a greater connection with friends, family and the environment. The renowned alien contactee and author Whitley Strieber claims that many abductees experience paranormal phenomena as part of a wider spiritual transformation. He writes:

“What basically happens is that the witness’s whole sense of reality explodes. People become psychic, they begin to believe that they can see into the future… they acquire wisdom and new compassion… they become deeply concerned with the welfare of the environment.”5

The connection between alien abductions and the paranormal has been extensively studied by Denise Stoner and Kathleen Marden. In 2012, the independent researchers conducted a study in which 75 alien abductees were given a multiple-choice questionnaire and asked their personal background, religious/spiritual beliefs and other relevant information. They also completed a survey which contained 16 fill-in questions relating to their abduction experience. According to the data, 51% experienced paranormal activity for the first-time following contact, 89% reported receiving telepathic messages from their extraterrestrial visitors, and 72% claimed they were more sensitive to their surrounding environment.6

    Poltergeist Activity

One paranormal phenomenon commonly associated with alien abductions is poltergeist activity. In a study conducted by Simon Brian Harvey-Wilson, 11 abductees were randomly selected from an abduction support group in Australia and interviewed about their alien encounter.

Wilson found that many subjects had experienced unusual activity in their homes following contact. A subject, named Angela, described “most electrical appliances not working, having a lot of static. And the television… often just goes to static.” Another subject, named Karen, explained how her stereo system would turn on“in the middle of the night and then it would actually flip through to my favourite song on the CD… and it would just play the song. And then it would stop and turn off.” One subject even recalled how objects would fly off the shelves without any sign of disturbance and the electrical system in her house would suddenly blow:

“I had occasions when things would move off the shelf, and they wouldn’t smash on the floor… they would be able to move from one place very carefully to another… Other times, I would have enormous electrical activity in the house, so much so that it would blow. It would actually trigger the alarm system or trigger things to come on.”7

These experiences correspond with the research conducted by Stoner and Marden, which found that 88% of abductees experienced poltergeist activity in their homes following contact. 68% of them reported malfunctions in electronic equipment such as computers, radios and televisions.8 Some of them also reported light bulbs turning on and off, street lights blinking when they walked underneath them, and the hands on their watches spinning.

The connection between alien abductions and poltergeist activity became so apparent during Marden and Stoner’s research that they decided to measure the electromagnetic fields of their subjects.9 They used a TriField Natural EMF Meter to measure the surrounding environment and the bodies of abductees within four days of an abduction, as well as the bodies of a control group. The data suggested that the electromagnetic field of the abductees was significantly higher than the ambient environment and control group following an alien encounter. Although the sample size was too small to make definitive conclusions, the findings correspond with research undertaken by Professor Ring at the University of Connecticut who found that many abductees report a heightened sensitivity to electromagnetic fields.10

Even more interesting is that many UFO researchers believe there is a fundamental connection between extraterrestrials and electromagnetism. UFO researcher Chris Line believes that extraterrestrial beings are vibrational in nature and therefore possess the ability to conceal themselves within the infrared part of the electromagnetic spectrum.11

The author Ann Druffel also believes that since reality is ultimately electromagnetic, “very close-up sightings, and particularly those which involve paralysis, abduction and other unpleasant experiences, might be from an interdimensional source, co-existing with our earth.”12 If these extraterrestrial beings exist as a purely energetic form of consciousness, it may be possible for them to interfere with the electromagnetic fields produced by physical objects as well as the human mind and body. Poltergeist activity could be representative of the same extraterrestrial intelligence encountered during alien abductions, but merely manifested in a different form. This would make sense considering that many abductees claim extraterrestrials have the ability to shapeshift and assume a variety of physical and non-physical forms.

    Healing Abilities

Poltergeist activity is not the only paranormal phenomenon associated with alien abductions. During his research, Simon Brian Harvey-Wilson found that many of his subjects developed healing abilities either prior or subsequent to contact.13 One subject, named Patricia, explained how her encounter with extraterrestrials resulted in her becoming a holistic healer. She claims to now have the ability to “pick up information about where trauma has occurred or where energy blocks are in the body that may have manifested… what information, what emotion is held in that… or what trauma is held in the body in those areas.”Another subject, named Angela, claimed that she developed healing abilities after she was abducted by aliens as a teenager, and could now “pick up on people’s feeling’s feelings and emotions and thoughts” and see “where they had problems, like diseases in their bodies.”

These accounts correspond with the research undertaken by the renowned psychiatrist and writer John E. Mack (1929–2004) who interviewed hundreds of abductees as part of a government-sponsored research project into the extraterrestrial phenomena. He found that a significant percentage of abductees developed healing abilities after contact as well as a greater connection with people, animals and nature.14 This corresponds with research undertaken by Stoner and Marden who found that 50% of abductees were able to heal others for a short period of time following an alien abduction, and 2% possessed healing abilities from a young age. Marden states that many subjects reported having their vibrational frequency raised during an abduction, which was apparently connected to the development of healing abilities.15

    John E. Mack (1929–2004)

The question as to why abductees develop psychic abilities remains a mystery. However, one explanation is that these extraterrestrials are benevolent and want to enhance humanity’s psychospiritual development. The idea of otherworldly beings assisting humanity is integral to the culture of shamanic societies in which the shaman communicates with spirit-helpers to acquire knowledge or wisdom that can benefit the community. The religious historian Mircea Eliade talks about how “the shaman frequently sees and consults with his guardian spirit… has it help him, and uses it to help others to recover from illness and injury.”16 Comparing shamanism and the strangeness of alien encounters, shamans and abductees could be essentially communicating with the same benevolent ‘alien’ intelligence that, in certain cases, aims to physically, emotionally and spiritually heal humans.

    Possible theories and explanations

Much research has been undertaken into the psychological makeup of abductees to assess whether certain personality traits increase the probability of individuals experiencing paranormal occurrences.17 While these studies are valuable from a scientific perspective, they do not say anything meaningful about the experience itself. If paranormal occurrences are real but can only be experienced by a certain personality-type, it would make sense that abductees share a common psychological profile. This does not make their experiences invalid or delusional in any way, however.

From a philosophical perspective, all sensory experience is mediated through the psychology of the mind. If you placed a highly attentive individual in the middle of a city, they would notice certain faces, objects and buildings that other people might not; this does not mean that what they are witnessing is purely imaginary. Rather, their psychological predisposition enables them to experience a wider range of sensory input than the ‘ordinary’ person. In this sense, it could be argued that abductees are more likely to experience paranormal phenomena because they are more perceptive, insightful and open to such experiences.

Empirical science may never be able to explain the relationship between alien abductions and the paranormal if these experiences are representative of a reality that exists outside the ordinary boundaries of sensory perception. As many UFO researchers have noted, the idea that abductees are communicating with entities from other worlds cannot be entirely dismissed.

The UFO researcher Nick Pope suggests that the “idea of abductions being explained in terms of our reality interacting with other realities must be considered. If abductions are taking place, then it is possible that those responsible might come from another dimension or parallel universe.”18 Writer C.D.B. Bryan also believes that “there might exist simultaneous other realities; further, that it is during, or within some sort of overlapping of these realities that alien abductions occur.”19In this sense, the relationship between alien abductions and the paranormal might be explained through the existence of other dimensional realities, which abductees are able to access through altered states of consciousness.

This explanation makes sense from the perspective that the brain operates like a television set and can ‘tune into’ different frequencies of reality. The writer and journalist Graham Hancock is a well-known proponent of this theory and says that “the relationship of consciousness to the brain may be less like the relationship to the generator to the electricity it produces and more like the relationship of the TV signal to the TV set.”20In this sense, the brain does not create consciousness but acts as a bioelectrical conduit for its reception; the world that we regularly perceive is one of many dimensions that theoretically exist but remain inaccessible during ordinary states of awareness. Abductees, however, possess the ability to ‘tune’ into other frequencies of reality and communicate with entities of an interdimensional nature.

While scientific materialism claims that consciousness is generated by the brain, this argument presents a profound philosophical problem: how do electrical circuits in the brain, which are non-conscious, produce consciousness? This question becomes much less problematic if we assume that the brain ‘receives’ consciousness and other realities can be accessed when the biochemical composition of the brain is altered. From this perspective, alien abductions and certain paranormal experiences are pointing to other dimensional realities that materialise during altered states of awareness.

Although this theory of consciousness contradicts the materialistic view that alien abductions result from biochemical activity in the brain, these perspectives are not incompatible. There is no reason to assume that because alien abductions occur within the brain that they have no dimensional reality. From a philosophical perspective, all sensory experience has a neurological explanation. Our entire perception – colour, shape, taste, smell, touch – is the product of biochemical processes that occur within the mind. If we assume that the brain acts as a receptor for different frequencies of reality, then it is possible that abductees are accessing alternate worlds and communicating with entities of an interdimensional nature.

    Parallel Universes and Quantum Physics

The idea there are multiple dimensions is increasingly supported by modern science, particularly in the field of quantum physics. In 1957, Princeton graduate Hugh Everett III proposed the ‘many worlds’ interpretation of quantum mechanics as a means by which to resolve the ‘wave-function collapse’ problem. The wave function is a mathematical expression of all potential states of a subatomic system, such as every possible location of a quantum particle. One cannot attribute a greater degree of reality to one state over any other; they all exist as mathematical potentialities until they are measured by a conscious observer, at which point the wave function ‘collapses’ and a single state becomes observable. This poses a problem in regard to what defines ‘measurement’ and why the act of observation affects reality at a subatomic level. In order to resolve this problem, Everett theorised that when a measurement is made one outcome occurs in the universe that we are currently occupying and another occurs in an alternate universe. In this sense, there are many different universes, not that different from our own, in which all possible outcomes occur.21

The ‘multiple-worlds’ theory has since been developed by other scientists. In 2014, physicists Michael Hal, Dirk-Andre Deckert and Howard M. Wiseman published an academic paper entitled ‘Quantum Phenomena Modelled by Interactions between Many Classical Worlds’, in which they propose there are an infinite number of universes that overlap one another and occupy the same region of space-time simultaneously.22 Furthermore, multidimensionality is a key component of string theory, which proposes that subatomic particles are comprised of multidimensional ‘strings’ or ‘string-loops’.

As modern science finds more evidence for the existence of multiple universes, the interdimensional explanation for alien abductions and their connection to the paranormal starts to make a lot more sense. As the American ethnobotanist, mystic, and psychonaut Terence McKenna (1946–2000) observed, “if you take the broad world of the so-called mysteries – parapsychological, shamanic, extraterrestrial, and so forth – and hypothesize another spatial dimension, then all these mysteries become trivial… This sort of thing becomes quite the ordinary run of things if were hypothesize dimensions hidden from ordinary experience.”23

    Conclusion

As one can see, there is a close relationship between alien abductions and the paranormal. The research undertaken by Simon Brian Harvey-Wilson, Denise Stoner, Kathleen Marden and John E. Mack suggests that many abductees experience poltergeist activity and develop healing abilities. They also experience a greater connection with friends, family and the environment as part of a wider spiritual transformation. While scientific materialists might claim that abductees are more prone to paranormal experiences because of their neurology, this argument is redundant when one considers that all sensory experience originates in the brain. Just because a phenomenon has a neurological explanation does not make it invalid or implausible.

An intriguing explanation for alien abductions and the paranormal is that they reflect alternate dimensions existing outside the ordinary boundaries of sensory perception. From this perspective, the brain operates much like a television set and can ‘tune’ into different frequencies of reality. While this theory may seem absurd, modern science is finding increasing evidence for the existence of multiple dimensions. The ‘many worlds’ interpretation of quantum mechanics, as well as the theoretical framework of string theory, suggests there are multiple universes overlapping each other within the same region of space-time.

If abductees are able to somehow access these parallel worlds and communicate with beings of an interdimensional nature – or indeed ‘extraterrestrials’ are breaking through into our world – then paranormal phenomena could be the result of interacting with these alternate dimensions.

Mysterious Beasts & Natural Wonders: Toward a New Understanding of Bigfoot, Flying Saucers, Fairies & other Inconvenient Realities

    From New Dawn 179 (Mar-Apr 2020)

Several years ago a critic wrote about me, “Horowitz is an okay historian, but the guy believes in leprechauns for chrissakes.”That is true – I plead guilty. In this paper, I will try to explain why my critic is right.

Although I am not a crypto-zoologist, I am a great admirer of the paranormal investigator Charles Fort (1874–1932). People wouldn’t necessarily call me a Fortean, though. I don’t study anomalies. But my critic was referencing a series of events that I once related, which happened to me about 20 years ago in the nation of Belize in Central America.

For those of you who don’t know Belize, it’s a very beautiful, English-speaking country that borders Guatemala and Mexico on the Caribbean. Belize is filled with lush forestry, rainforests, snaking rivers and hills – including vast hills in the highlands, which are the subject of folklore and mysteries.

I was staying in the hill country at an eco-jungle lodge founded by a very enterprising couple and their kids from Maryland. They carved the whole place themselves out of the jungle interior. The area attracted a fair amount of ecotourism. Staying at a lodge next door was the actress and model Brooke Shields (who was very nice).

Now, a cabdriver was taking us to this jungle lodge from the airport in Belize City. It was a long drive of about two-and-a-half hours. The final leg ascended a very rocky, unpaved road up a mountain. It was difficult to navigate in a standard car because the rocks and roots and undulating landscape caused the car to hit bottom from time to time, and the terrain can damage the chassis.

As we drove up the hill, the driver started saying, “I really don’t like going up into these hills. As soon as I drop you off, I am going to turn around and speed off and get out of here.” It seemed odd to speed away on such treacherous landscape. “What’s the rush?” I asked.

“Well,” he said, “there are little men who live in these hills. They’re called aluxes. They’ve lived here for centuries. If you see one of them while you’re walking around in the forest you’ll get so frightened that you won’t be able to speak. Your voice will get caught in your throat. I really don’t like coming up here.”

Sure enough, he dropped us off, turned around, and sped away. I thought, “Well, that’s kind of strange.”

We checked into the lodge and the next day went canoeing down a river that ran below the ridge on which it was perched. I started telling one of my travelling companions that I was really kind of pissed off at this cab driver because I thought he was just playing “scare the tourist.” I thought he was trying to have a little fun at our expense.

As I was talking about this, drifting along this deadly quiet river, a big boulder came crashing down in front of us, having been rolled down a hill or falling down a hill from somewhere along the ravine we were canoeing through.

Figurine of an Alux – Belize’s legendary “little folk.”

I got nervous and I thought, “All right, I need to watch what I say.” Because there’s a folk tradition that if you talk about these creatures they come around. This is why some people in Ireland today won’t make reference to “little folk” or leprechauns – they use euphemisms like “the other crowd.” This opens an interesting point: you find traditions of these little creatures all throughout the world. This folklore exists in Central America, in Ireland, in Polynesia, in West Africa. Virtually every continent has these legends, going back centuries, which include the detail that if you start talking about these little beings, sometimes called wood sprites or fairies or brownies, you invite them into your life, and they can cause mischief.

Many traditional-minded people in Ireland today believe so strongly in the existence of “the other crowd” that in 1999 a major highway under construction in County Clare got rerouted to avoid running past what was known as a fairy bush – the domain, so it is said, of these little beings. The fear was that if you run a highway through a fairy bush you will incur their wrath, and they will cause accidents. A folklorist and historian named Eddie Lenihan, with whom I’ve worked and greatly respect, helped prompt the change.

    Who Goes There?

Perhaps I’m sympathetic to these events because I do not want to live in a world where no mysteries remain. I do not want to live in a world where you hear a twig snapping in the woods and don’t wonder, “Who goes there?” I don’t want to live in a digital, fluorescent-lit environment in which we feel that we know everything that’s out there.

Call it sentiment, but I think that most of us feel intuitively, and sometimes through personal experience or study, that the belief nothing at all is lurking in the dark corners doesn’t cover all the bases of life.

There exists so much testimony and so many stories of people having unusual experiences with things that are not supposed to be there, whether they’re little men or Bigfoot or something that’s lurking in the water. We’re all attached to these stories to some degree. Obviously, the concept of Bigfoot or some kind of mysterious simian runs not only through a great deal of our folklore but wields a great hold on people’s attention today.

The question is, why? We face so many crises and problems in the world: war, climate change, famine, and all of the wonderful things coming out of the White House. Why would we be interested today in the persistence of mysterious winged beasts or Bigfoot or yeti or fairies? For what reason?

I think part of the reason is not only that some of these things may be empirically real – when considering the paranormal I do not remove empiricism from the table prima facie, a point to which I’ll return – but I think our fascination with mysterious beasts and natural wonders speaks to how we feel, and have reason to feel, that there exists an unseen dimension of life. Something beyond our workaday, five-sensory existence.

What I am describing goes beyond a wish to believe in the mythical. Rather, it touches upon our understanding of a world that doesn’t fully disclose itself, but that we experience intuitively, insightfully, and even cognitively in terms of phenomena that may be causatively related to our minds, as well as to unseen dimensions, the reality of which we’re unable to fully decipher but which we catch glimpses of from time to time.

    The UFO Thesis

This is true also of so-called UFO or extraterrestrial sightings. I think that we are actually living through a moment, in the here and now, where we are experiencing a cultural breakthrough in understanding about the existence of unknown forces and expressions of life.

This can be seen in particular with regard to the UFO thesis. In September 2019, the Guggenheim Museum in New York City hosted a remarkable, and I would say unprecedented, panel on UFOs and extraterrestrials. This was notable in itself because the Guggenheim is not considered a fount of occult passions. This is the first time I can recall any major cultural institution in the city hosting a panel like this and earnestly exploring this question.

The panel was the work of a very innovative curator, Troy Therrien, who oversees the Guggenheim’s architectural collection. It featured writer and scholar Gordon White, a wonderful occult intellect, and philosopher and historian Diana Pasulka. It was a fascinating program before a packed house. Afterwards, the curator asked me: “At what point do you think it is going to become intellectually embarrassing within our culture not to take seriously the question of UFOs?” I told him that I do not refer casually to paradigm shifts. I often deflect questions from mainstream journalists about supposed occult revivals because I think such framings are usually a way of trying to find a news hook. I don’t speak casually about those kinds of cultural shifts. With that in mind, I replied, “I actually think, in all honesty, that we have just now, at this very time, entered the point culturally where it is no longer sustainable or even intellectually serious to wave off the notion of UFOs.”

This shift arose in part from an event in 2017. The Pentagon and the Navy released cockpit footage and recordings of pilots witnessing UFOs, including vehicles moving at unbelievable speeds, behaving in ways that airborne vehicles are not supposed to behave, and the pilots asking: “What is that?” This material was so plain, clear, and persuasive that it moved even holdouts in the gatekeeping culture to acknowledge its significance.

The footage appeared in a prominent and widely read piece in The New York Times, co-written by the excellent researcher Leslie Kean. I consider it one of the most significant news stories because it finally moved the dial on the debate. The question of what UFOs are remains unsettled, of course; but that the testimony and records of such phenomena raise profoundly valid questions is now denied by no serious person.

I date the before-and-after of this shift to a pair of columns that appeared in the same newspaper by the opinion writer Ross Douthat. This writer considers himself a no-nonsense, old-school conservative, of which we have few remaining in the US. In December 2017, Douthat wrote a column headlined “Flying Saucers and Other Fairy Tales.” As you can gather, the column denigrated interest in UFOs as a persistent and silly trope. Oddly enough, as a device for dismissing the delusions of UFO acolytes, Douthat used the work of my friend Jacques Vallée. Jacques is known not only for co-designing the prototype of the Internet, but he is also one of the most trenchantly intelligent UFO researchers of our time, as well as a brilliant social observer and writer. His diaries Forbidden Science revive a style of serial-memoir writing that hasn’t been seen since the early-to-mid twentieth century.

The Observatory is famous for the “Arecibo message,” a 1974 interstellar radio message carrying basic information about humanity and Earth sent to globular star cluster M13. Photo credit Jacqueline Castel

The columnist cited Jacques as saying that there was mechanical unlikelihood of vehicles from outer space being able to reach our terrestrial confines. But what Douthat omitted in Jacques’ work, and what is most distinguishing in his theorising about UFOs, is that he long ago posited there are so many apparent mechanical impossibilities involving UFOs that, following the principle of Occam’s Razor, it’s plainer and broader to theorise that some of these sightings may be extra-dimensional. I’ll say more about that and define what is meant by extra-dimensional. Oddly, the columnist entirely omitted that key facet of Jacques’s outlook.

Flash forward to August 2019, a month before the Guggenheim panel. The same columnist reversed course and wrote a piece, while not related specifically to UFOs, in which he noted the persuasive (if unsettled) nature of some of the UFO data that had recently been released, without noting that less than two years earlier he dismissed the validity of considering such data. I tweeted my thanks that he had seen fit to change his position. To my surprise, the New York Times opinion section retweeted me – another institution not known for its occult passions. I began to realise, typified by this little turn of events, that we have reached a turning point where it was intellectually unserious to dismiss the UFO question. I would challenge any materialist scientist or philosopher to push back against that statement.

    Random Numbers & Patterns

Until 2007, there was a parapsychology lab at Princeton University. It was known by the acronym PEAR for Princeton Engineering Anomalies Research Lab. This was a serious parapsychology lab in existence for about 30 years. When PEAR was operating it conducted a number of experiments with machines known as random number generators. We use random number generators every day – they produce an infinitely variable pattern of numbers and we commonly use these things to set passwords.

Parapsychologists sometimes use random number generators to test for ESP or telekinesis. They might place a subject in proximity to a random number generator to see if he or she proves capable of disrupting the randomness, of creating a signal in the noise, so to speak. Perhaps I jump to a conclusion by using the term create – but, rather, there is congruity between the individual’s efforts to interrupt randomness and the appearance of a pattern that shouldn’t be there.

One of the things the Princeton lab did, going back many years, was to place random number generators at various locations around the world. It was found – and there have been journal articles about this and I’m simplifying it somewhat – that during the events of 9/11, immediately preceding the events, during them, and immediately following, the random number generators started displaying patterns.

There was an interruption in these completely randomised and chaotic displays of numbers. Suddenly numbers would repeat. There was a traceable pattern at certain moments. Researchers were left with an enormous question, which begs further research and further understanding: Why, at a moment of what could be loosely described as a global trauma, did this network of random number generators demonstrate a pattern, an interruption in the noise?

This raises the tantalising prospect of mental causation. Of whether we, through the agency of thought, are able to impact and produce outcomes. This isn’t a paper on mental causation, but there are many different scientific fields, including neuroplasticity, quantum mechanics, placebo studies, and psychical research, that have demonstrated causation relating to thought. One way of empirically discussing the manifestation of energies is to note that during that period of global trauma we saw some apparently unified impact of thought, which was exercising probable telekinetic influence on this network of random number generators.

The Princeton Engineering Anomalies Research Lab, a research program at Princeton University that studied parapsychology (and was closed in 2007), established the Global Consciousness Project in 1998 to detect possible interactions of “global consciousness” with physical systems. Employing electronic random number generators in locations around the globe (see map), the project detected anomalous fluctuations in the nine-day period around the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack as per the graphics. When great events synchronised the feelings of millions of people, their network of RNGs became “subtly structured.” (see http://noosphere.princeton.edu)

    Check Your Foundation

I think we may be approaching a new way of understanding Bigfoot sightings, UFOs, persistent reports of anomalous beasts and things that go bump in the night and twigs snapping, so to speak.

People in many reaches of US society are obsessed with the existence of Bigfoot. It is the subject of these mostly awful cable TV pseudo-documentaries; it fuels an enormous stream of books, articles, debates, and controversies. Scientists complain that no one has been able to produce viable DNA evidence of Bigfoot. One might argue that point, but that’s the broadly held critique.

If one concedes the point, however, it could open to a more radical and supple thesis. Several scientists, including Richard Feynman, have observed that you can’t get out of a problem by employing the same thinking that got you into it. I’ve found that is a universal principle. I have found it a good principle in writing, for example. If you write a sentence or paragraph and you’re wrestling with it and clarity keeps eluding you, there’s probably something wrong with the foundation. It’s best to toss out the line or paragraph and start fresh. If something proves chronically difficult – this is true in relationships, too – there’s probably a flaw in the foundation itself.

The same may hold true for the question of mysterious beasts and natural wonders. Maybe the reason we don’t find more physical or DNA evidence is that, while these persistently reported phenomena are real and are actually occurring, they do not necessarily conform to our five-sensory material lives.

This returns us to the observation that Jacques Vallée made about UFOs probably being some kind of inter-dimensional manifestation, which enter our awareness intermittently and then vanish. There may exist an infinitude, or superposition, of events occurring all the time and everywhere, which we are capable of measuring or experiencing only intermittently (such as in the cases of documentary imagery), fractionally, or at periods of extreme sensitivity, in the same way that ESP or telekinesis may manifest at highly receptive moments. This ties into the question of psychical energies being unleashed during instances of trauma or crisis or intensity.

    Super Events

Consider it this way: Within the particle lab, more than eighty years of quantum experiments demonstrate that subatomic particles occupy a state of superposition or a wave state. As such, they appear everywhere at once. They exist in a state of infinite possibility. We know this because subatomic particles display interference patterns, which demonstrate that they are non-localized. They exist in a state of potential until an observer takes a measurement. When an observer decides to take a measurement the particle collapses from a wave state to localized state. Without that measurement, the particle will not occupy a definite, locatable place.

This is not controversial. No quantum physicist would challenge eighty years of this data. What is controversial are the implications of the data, and the willingness of our culture to follow those implications. In the 1930s, physicist Erwin Schrödinger devised a thought experiment known as Schrödinger’s Cat. He intended to force his colleagues to acknowledge the impossible possibilities that occurred in the particle lab. Schrodinger challenged them to acknowledge the evident absurdity of what was being documented – of this surreal reality in which everything exists everywhere at once, in a state of infinitude.

One variant of Schrödinger’s Cat experiment could be put this way: You take a house cat and place around its neck a collar with what Schrödinger called a “diabolical device.” Upon contact with a single atom this device releases a fatal poison. You take the collared cat and place it in one of a pair of boxes. You then direct a single atom at the two boxes. After you check the boxes to see the outcome. What would you find?

Schrödinger’s cat thought experiment: a cat, a flask of poison, and a radioactive source are placed in a sealed box. If an internal monitor (e.g. Geiger counter) detects radioactivity (i.e. a single atom decaying), the flask is shattered, releasing the poison, which kills the cat. The Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics implies that after a while, the cat is simultaneously alive and dead. Yet, when one looks in the box, one sees the cat either alive or dead, not both alive and dead. This poses the question of when exactly quantum superposition ends and reality collapses into one possibility or the other.

All commonly observed reality dictates if the atom went into the empty box, the cat would be alive. If the atom went into the box that held the cat and tripped the poison device, the cat would be dead. Simple, right? But Schrödinger said, no, that’s not reality at all. You would have to allow for the existence of a dead/alive cat. Because at one time, when that atom was in a wave state, it appeared in both boxes at once. It became localized in a single box only when you went to check.

Hence, reality demands that you would have a dead/alive cat. It’s impossible, it makes no sense, and yet it’s absolutely required if we’re to accept the data from quantum physics.

In the 1950s, physicist Hugh Everett extrapolated further from the Schrödinger’s Cat experiment. Everett contended that the timing of your decision to look or not look in the boxes would create a past, present and future for that cat. If you were to wait eight hours, say, until you checked the boxes, you would not only have a dead/alive cat, but the alive cat, having been stuck in the box for eight hours, would be hungry. You actually created a past narrative and present for that animal. Your decision to look, not look, to wait, to not check it all, creates an arc of life for this animal.

That could be the actual nature of reality: all outcomes exist in infinite potential and become localized or actualised only when they reach our perspective. This may be a matter of measurement, focus, or awareness, accident or choice.

Leaving aside the question of freewill (another issue entirely), what I’ve described raises the possibility that these persistent, extraordinary events – sightings of everything from serpents in the water, to mysterious winged beasts, to otherworldly beings, to gnomes, to Bigfoot – may be the result of perspective and of these things intermittently localizing in our reality.

A related possibility comes from what is called string theory. String theorists try to explain the strange behaviour of subatomic objects, as well as why such objects affect one another at distances, and why, as Isaac Newton observed, even macro objects at vast removes mirror each other’s motions. String theory holds that all particles and all matter are not separate entities but rather are part of vast, undulating networks of strings. When an object at one point in space affects another object, we’re not seeing two distinct entities but a unified string of objects. What’s more, different dimensions and universes exist along these strings, so we may not always see the thing causing an effect. In string theory, all material and events are one whole. We catch only hints of this through exquisitely fine measurement.

When speaking of measurement, we naturally think of laboratory instruments. But what are our senses if not instruments of measurement through which we navigate reality? On the psychological scale, it may be that at moments of profound sensitivity, or at moments in which we are emotionally primed in a certain way – maybe through trauma, through euphoria, through a sense of crisis – we catch glimpses of things that are real but do not usually register with the senses or mechanics through which we experience daily life. Anomalous entities exist, but they exist at other points on a vibrating, cosmic string, or what we might call another dimension. That’s one theory. Another, not necessarily at odds with string theory, is that these anomalies occupy a state of superposition which you select into your locality – not manifest but select, which is my preferred term – through perspective.

Hence, these strange events or entities may be real, but they are perceived only occasionally, and we give them names like Bigfoot or fairies or UFOs. These potentialities exist all around us, but we don’t possess the instrumentation to measure such things. Our way of viewing the world is coarse and limited – even illusory. For example, we organise our lives by linear time. Linear time feels very real. It’s overwhelmingly persuasive. But linearity itself is an illusion. It is a necessary illusion which we use to organise life, but it’s not real.

We know that time slows down at or near light speed. The aging process slows when a being is moving near light speed. We likewise know that time slows or bends in environments of extreme gravity, like black holes. These things are no longer theoretical, they’ve been measured, they’re real, they’re actual. Yet they make no sense to us. As we go through daily life and our commutes and so on, it makes no impact on us that time can actually slow.

Even knowing this, being able to understand this, being able to talk about this, doesn’t necessarily impact our everyday experience of linearity. Because linearity is probably a very necessary illusion for five sensory beings. But it’s a device, not ultimate reality. Ultimate reality is stranger than we’re given to believe.

    Why Don’t We See Reality?

Why don’t we pick up more on this material? Why does life seem so orderly to us? There’s just one of me here, there’s just one of you there, there’s one chair that you’re sitting on. There’s not an infinitude of chairs. It feels so practical, so actual. It’s difficult to imagine that any of this quantum or string phenomena can be real in more than an abstract way or on the subatomic scale. Philosopher William James, in his Gifford lectures in 1902, made an observation that speaks to this. When a mystic sees something, James said, it’s as if he or she is viewing it through a microscope. The mystic sees more and more of what’s really going on because of his or her extreme sensitivity.

If I look at a drop of water, all I see is a common drop. It’s translucent, it feels like what I call wet. But if I look at that same drop through a microscope, all kinds of things are revealed. There are single-cell organisms, there are bacteria, there are molecules moving around. The molecules are made up of atoms and other particles that are similarly moving around. All kinds of things are occurring that I don’t normally see.

James made the contention that the mystic is always viewing things as if through a microscope. When you pan the camera back, so to speak, you experience less and less of what’s really happening. Without crediting James, quantum physicists today call this the phenomenon of “information leakage.” They respond to the apparent disparity between the particle world and our macro world by saying what James said, which is that when you’re measuring things with extremely fine and well-tuned instruments, you’re seeing more and more of what’s really going on. But when your capacity for measurement coarsens, you lose data and see less and less of what’s occurring.

Just as linear time is a device, just as particles exist in a wave state or state of superposition, it is possible that we live amidst an infinitude of extraordinary events, which we perceive in only fragments or at fleeting moments, maybe moments of great awareness, maybe moments in which our ordinary thought patterns, for whatever reason, get interrupted, maybe moments that are available to some of you because you have a gift for what we call ESP or sensitivity or intuition. It could be that at such times, the individual is capable of seeing what’s really happening, and yet such individuals get smeared with terms like psychosis, fraud, imagination, fantasy, or confirmation bias. Materialists over-rely on the term confirmation bias to ignore testimony. Consistent testimony from varying sources forms a record and should be considered. Materialists fail to realise that confirmation bias, or prejudicial thought, is their own problem, too.

If my contention is correct, which is to say you get what you’re looking for, we’re all in the same boat. So let’s sit down together in an interdisciplinary way and have a conversation and try to determine the topography. We must try to understand more of what’s going on. We won’t get there if we dismiss or underfund or ban the so-called borderline sciences. Think of the possibilities that open to us if scholarly research into psi or extra-cognition really becomes available. If places like the Princeton Engineering Anomalies Research lab didn’t have to close because it was time for the founders to retire and nobody else had the energy to maintain the kind of fundraising or fight the battles that they fought to keep that lab alive.

We have money for everything in this society. There’s no shortage of resources. And yet we always seem to cry poverty when it comes to dispensing resources in a more democratic way or allotting really modest sums to keep alive research into the nature of reality itself. The reason I appreciate today’s best paranormal investigators, and why I appreciate historical figures like Charles Fort, is because they poke holes in the straight story. They drive us to ask questions that might otherwise never get considered.

    A Damnable Bore

Fort himself was a fascinating character. He was born in Albany, New York, in 1874 and lived and worked for much of his life in The Bronx. Like the occult scholar Manly P. Hall, Fort did a great deal of his research in the New York Public Library (where I now sit in a research room writing these words). Newspapers used to call Fort “the mad genius of the Bronx.” He produced his first of four books in the year 1919. It was called The Book of the Damned. By “damned” Fort meant the facts that didn’t fit in: outsider facts, theories, and ideas; facts that were considered unfit for consumption, so they were pushed to the margins.

Fort would gather news reports of things happening around the world that weren’t supposed to be happening, like mysterious airships in an age before we had the term flying saucers; frogs falling from the sky; mysterious beasts; spontaneous combustion; telekinesis – all sorts of things that didn’t fit the straight story.

Some people thought Fort was a genius, that he was modernity’s greatest critic of science, because he understood that science in the early 20th century had formed its own orthodoxy, its own canon, to the point of excluding things that didn’t fit in.

The novelist Theodore Dreiser was a great admirer of Fort. He said, “To me no one in the world has suggested the underlying depths and mysteries and possibilities as has Fort. To me he is simply stupendous.” Whereas H.G. Wells called Fort “one of the most damnable bores who ever cut scraps from out-of-the-way newspapers.” So, there was a binary attitude about Charles Fort. But I’ve always loved the man, and I think his work has retained a legion of fans and readers precisely because he was capable of poking holes in the straight story.

    Beastly Traits

There’s another dimension to the presence of mysterious or allegorical beasts. Some of the beasts that appear in parable and mythology, like the sphinx or griffin or centaur, summon us to traits that are actual or potential parts of our personas, of our abilities as human beings, which we are divorced from, which get pushed off to the margins of our understanding, which we can speak of only in terms of metaphor because they’re not accepted, they’re not understood, they’re not integrated into the human story. As Charles Fort would say, they’re “damned.”

Obadiah Harris, the past president of Manly P. Hall’s Philosophical Research Society (PRS) in Los Angeles, shared a wonderful story with me a few years before his death in 2019. We held a very moving memorial service for Obadiah at PRS, which you can find online. Obadiah said that when Manly Hall used to ready himself in his office each Sunday morning prior to delivering his weekly talk, he would pause before his altar and rub a wonderful little Egyptian statuette of a cat. It was a black onyx model of Bastet, one of the Egyptian cat gods. He would rub this little cat for wisdom because a cat has the ability to see in the dark. Many people felt Manly displayed a preternatural ability of speaking extremely fluidly and at great length without notes. I’m not suggesting a connection but I did like the story. And this little cat really existed – I held it in my hands – but it has unfortunately disappeared from Manly’s office. We’d like to re-select this little cat into existence.

Manly P. Hall (1901–1990), founder of the Philosophical Research Society, reading in his study.

We often ascribe powers to animals that exist within ourselves, but that we don’t feel capable of summoning. We mythologise them. In that vein, I want to share the story of two episodes I experienced recently in Egypt in connection with mythical or allegorical animals.

In February 2019, I was travelling in Egypt with my friend Ronni Thomas. Ronni is a brilliant film director and we are making a documentary about the 1908 occult book The Kybalion. I once regarded The Kybalion as a kind of early-twentieth century novelty of occult literature. Several years ago, however, I came to realise that I was wrong. I was underestimating the nature and the greatness of that short book. It’s a beautiful and very relevant distillation of the spiritual psychology found in the Hermetic writings that appeared during the final stages of Egyptian antiquity.

For the film, we decided to go back to the source, as much as we were capable. Ronni made the courageous decision that we should do some filming in Egypt. Off we went to Egypt in the month of February. I can disclose this now that I’m safely back home, but we had no license to actually film because it’s enormously expensive. We had a decent budget, but it was out of reach. So we had to surreptitiously film in Egypt, which is no small risk because if you’re caught without the proper licenses, you will be arrested and thrown in jail, which is probably not a great experience. We were very aware of this, but felt that even though we lacked the proper licensure, and we simply couldn’t afford it within the confines of our budget, we just had to do this.

We were able to get some extraordinary footage. There are sneak peaks of the documentary on YouTube and Vimeo. We expect the final film to be released in 2020. You’ll be surprised at how much footage we were able to gather illegally, but very lovingly, in Mother Egypt. We were also granted some remarkable access and opportunities. I had two opportunities that I want to share, both involving exposure to allegorical beasts.

Mitch Horowitz at the Temple of Karnak, Egypt, February 2019.

Subterranean chambers exist in the Valley of Kings that are off the path of most people who visit Egypt. These chambers are accessible if you’re basically willing to pay the right people. My wish is that it wouldn’t be commerce alone that allowed people to gain entry to these places, but sometimes you have to deal with the world as it is. We were willing, as much as we were able, to pay off the right people to enter some places that are normally off limits.

After paying, we were able to enter a chamber very, very deep in the Valley of Kings. Within this chamber is a large bas-relief of a bull. A bull in Ancient Egyptian symbolism represents strength, virility, and personal power. It’s an enormously potent image within the pantheon of Egyptian deities and allegories. The guide who took me into this chamber gestured to me that it was permissible to touch and lay hands on this enormous bas-relief. The carvings in the chamber were incredibly well preserved. One of the astounding things that we don’t always realise when we look at Egyptian monuments is that they were originally colourised. They were not only three dimensional, they were not only covered in beautiful precious stones and finishing material, but they were majestically and very vividly colourised. Over time, the most widely seen or weathered monuments have lost this colour.

This was within a very dry, temperate, cool underground chamber, and these images and bas-reliefs had been preserved going back thousands of years. I was a little uncomfortable when the guide invited me to lay hands on the bull because I have tremendous respect for antiquities, and I would never want to do anything to detract from the power and the beauty of these monuments. I’m very aware that if tourists and travellers are traipsing through the place all day and laying hands on the object, it gets damaged or degraded. And yet I felt that I was being given an invitation.

The philosopher Jacob Needleman once said to me, “What do you do when someone offers you a gift?” Brilliant student that I was, I just stared at him blankly. He said, “You accept it!” So I made the decision to accept this gift. I can only report in all candour what happened. As I laid hands on this bull, I experienced, call it what you will, a tremendous rush of lightning and electricity shooting through my body, and I felt this sense of inner light within me. The only phrasing I can use to describe it is just feeling this flash of lightning pass through me. It was an extraordinary and tactile experience.

Of course, one could say, “Look, you’re a suggestible guy, you’re an excitable person.” I don’t know, nor would the person saying that know, just what occurred. But I can only report that it was, for me, a palpable experience. Here I stood before this magnificent allegorical beast carved in a bas-relief going back more than 3,000 years, still fully colourised and vivid, and the symbol of virility and strength and power, and I was invited to lay my hands on it. I felt lightning absolutely pass through me. It was one of the most remarkable experiences of my life.

We had another experience when we were at the Temple of Karnak in Luxor. Our guide was aware that Ronni and I had occult interests. There’s a colloquialism in Egypt for people like us – they call us “meditators.” Terms like occult and New Age don’t translate very well. Once they say, “Oh, you’re meditators,” then they know what you want to see. Our guide for this leg of the trip was an extraordinary woman who was multilingual even though she had never travelled outside the country. She learned English, French, and Korean on her own through BBC language courses. She brought us to a small temple to the cat goddess Sekhmet, which is tucked away on a side path in this vast complex. This small temple is closed and padlocked. A soldier toting an automatic rifle and a robed guide guard it. The only way to gain entry is by paying a bribe. Again, you sometimes have to deal with the world as you find it. And, of course, people are entitled to earn a living.

The soldier and guide looked at us like, “Who are these two mangy characters?” We very nicely said hello and greeted them with as much money as possible, and then everybody was all smiles. We were invited to enter this chamber to Sekhmet, a goddess with the head of a cat and the body of a woman. I can’t begin to tell you how completely dark it was inside this chamber. The chamber is thousands of years old and there wasn’t so much as a streak of light, with no cracks or fissures in the wall.

We were guided to kneel at the feet of Sekhmet and invited to kiss her feet and lay our hands upon her body and recite a prayer. We performed this short ceremony in pitch blackness. This, too, was an experience of absolute transcendence. There seemed to be a complete dissolution between us as separate beings and the goddess before whom we kneeled. I think we both experienced a sense of dissolving, almost like a lightness of body that felt something like what an out-of-body experience might be like. We felt a complete disassociation crouched in the darkness before this goddess. We felt, you could say, almost a sense of transcendent oneness with that before us, and everything briefly entered a state of non-physicality. It was remarkable.

Statue of Sekhmet in small chapel of the Temple of Ptah in the precinct of Amun-Re at Karnak Temple. The statue, which is about two meters high, receives light only from a small hole in the ceiling.

I’m not someone who goes around collecting experiences, but this left us two travellers, two seekers going places off the permissible path, with perhaps some feeling for what our primeval ancestors might have felt in the presence of these extraordinary beings. The episode reaffirmed my belief, which I’ve explored elsewhere, that we have neglected some of the wisdom of our primeval ancestors who identified with and personified certain energies in deific form, and who gave these energies names, whether Set or Sekhmet or Bastet or Minerva or Zeus or Jupiter or Athena.

They identified these energies, maybe as projections of their own intellect or maybe non-localized intellect, and deified them. They also petitioned them. When people come to me in need, when they’re feeling at a dead end in life or things aren’t going the way they wish, my suggestion, as an ethical and spiritual experiment, is to identify a god or goddess from the ancient pantheon, whether from Egypt, Persia, the Hellenic world or elsewhere, one with whom you resonate, one that is meaningful to you, one whose characteristics or traits seem to capture something that you need in life, and having done so I see no reason why you cannot enter a prayerful state and make a petition to this deity and see what occurs. You may find exactly the help that you need. My contention is that the old gods may be lonely. They hunger for human attention and veneration.

People from all over the world used to travel great distances to honour and petition these gods. That is no longer so. It could be that these personified energies or intelligences hunger for human contact; and if you make the personal decision to attempt a relationship with one of these deities and to make a petition, you could be surprised.

I speak to you from deepest personal experience. I would never offer something as a suggestion that I haven’t tried and experimented with myself. I’ve had some of the deepest, most meaningful spiritual experiences of my life by following the path that I just described. You certainly don’t need to tell anybody what you’re doing; you don’t need to tell your shrink or your boyfriend or your spouse. It’s yours. It’s your private experiment. It’s something I’ve found bountifully fruitful and significant. We displace onto certain ideals of allegorical beasts and deities and beings, traits that perhaps exist within us and that we are capable of selecting or having a relationship with.

    Reclaiming the Damned

I have written elsewhere of how the snake or the serpent represented wisdom in cultures all over the world. This was true in Egyptian culture, this was true in Hebraic culture, this was true in Mayan culture, this was true in Celtic culture. Every culture around the world, spanning enormous stretches of time, distance, language, and custom, identified the snake as a symbol of illumination, possibility, provocation, and awareness.

I think that we, in the Western world, have made a tremendous misreading of Genesis 3, where we have associated the snake who conversed with Eve as a figure of evil or maleficence. Rather it was the snake who gave Eve permission to eat from the so-called Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, which the creator had placed in the midst of the garden, so the parable goes, even though the garden dwellers, who were supposedly beloved and cared for, were prohibited from eating from it and gaining awareness, and were told they would die if they did so. The snake told Eve, “You’ve been deceived. You will surely not die if you eat the fruit from this tree.” She took the challenge and did not die from eating the fruit, which she shared with Adam. Their eyes were opened, and they gained the capacity for measurement and creativity; they gained the capacity to argue with the creator, and they were expunged from the garden of paradise. Their offspring, Cain and Abel, so the story goes, got caught up in this tragic act of fratricide. But it’s very possible that the price of creativity, the price of awareness, the price of perspective, is friction.

Haven’t we seen this play out across our culture? In Europe, for centuries, they committed witch burnings, which are still occurring in parts of the world today. People who are clearly capable of functioning in the world are called lunatics or flying-saucer nuts when they have extraordinary experiences. Plato famously theorised that if we were all captured in a cave, chained and capable of witnessing reality only as shadows cast on a wall and someone was somehow able to leave the cave and came back and tell the other captives about the splendour that existed in the outside world, what would they do? They would kill the individual.

Isn’t that the story of the snake in the garden, essentially playing out over and over again? Every time a capable, mature, intelligent person speaks of an extraordinary experience, he or she is told, “Don’t talk about seeing a UFO. You’re going to lose your rank and your reputation within the Air Force. Don’t try to experiment with ESP, everybody’s going to think you’re a nut and you’re going to lose your departmental funding. Don’t question the standard dating of the Great Sphinx or of the pyramids because if you start questioning the standard timeline people in your department are going to get hostile toward you, and you’ll be branded a nut.”

What do we do? We disassociate from these abilities and experiences and code them into parable, story, myth, and archetype, because it’s a way of distancing ourselves from abilities and possibilities that exist within the human experience, but that are easier for us to understand and talk about, that are less risky for us, if we classify them as mythology, as anomalies, as wonders, as little green men, as strange encounters. People who testify to these things in an actual way are treated, in effect, like Adam and Eve, expelled from the garden of paradise, or seen differently, expelled from the garden of conformity. Yet this state of affairs is getting shaken up at this very moment.

As I mentioned earlier, I do not speak casually about paradigm shifts. Every generation seems to think it exists on some kind of a precipice. Some generations did indeed exist on a precipice. The World War I generation existed on a precipice. I don’t think one should speak about this casually. But I do believe we are facing possibilities and questions in our generation, at this very moment, that may upend our idea of what it means to be human as much as the theories of Darwin upended people’s views and understanding of human nature in the Victorian age.

I think we’re poised on this precipice, where we look out at the world, we look out at testimony of wondrous beasts, strange beings, and anomalous events, and we’re coming to realise that we’re not necessarily looking at things that are fantasies or chimeras. We are actually looking into a mirror. And what we’re looking at is gazing back at us. These are the traits of our own personas that we’re becoming reacquainted with. Our personas are inter-dimensional, unmoored by linearity, and symbiotic with a larger cosmic reality than we have previously understood.

Walking Between Worlds: UFOs & Consciousness

From New Dawn Special Issue Vol 13 No 6 (Dec 2019)

In December 2017 the New York Times released two videos of UAPs, or “unidentified aerial phenomenon” – a more official-sounding term for what most of us call UFOs or flying saucers. Both videos, now widely circulated on YouTube and various news outlets, show footage from an F-18 aircraft’s gun camera which has locked on to a mysterious disk-like object.

The monochrome tracking screen shows an indistinct ‘craft’ travelling at technologically impossible speeds and is accompanied by the pilot’s excited commentary. Perhaps the most disturbing part is that the US Navy validated the footage as the real deal, and not some hoax or misidentification. This has left many professional sceptics and debunkers with a tough nut to crack. True believers have celebrated the footage, seeing it as a significant step in full public disclosure of the reality of UFOs and extraterrestrials.

The rest of us are left feeling bewildered over an enigma that remains unexplained but also by its very nature seems fundamentally unanswerable. We have been presented with a true mystery, one that shows no signs of leaving us alone any time soon.

This remarkable new footage, says philosopher and journalist Daniel Pinchbeck, has moved the UFO phenomenon from the outer edges of public awareness to the centre. In his latest book, The Occult Control System (2019), Pinchbeck explores ways to understand the UFO mystery in a psychological and spiritual framework. He argues the UFO is fundamentally “unpresentable, unfathomable” but if we are to understand it and successfully neutralise its “implicitly threatening aspects,” we must define a “conceptual model that gives shape and coherence to the phenomenon.”

The new resurgence of interest in the UFO, sparked by the NYT article and other developments, finds us in an enviable position to think anew about a mystery that has haunted our skies and psyches for over half a century. Where do we begin?

    The Birth of a Mystery

Ever since the ‘official’ birth of the enigma, with Kenneth Arnold’s famous 1947 sighting of nine shiny disks zooming past Mount Rainer in the far north west of the United States, the mystery of the UFO has evolved and expanded at a dizzying pace. Related subjects now include crop circles, alien implants and abduction, genetic experimentation and extra-sensory perception. Undoubtedly there is a haunting question mark lingering over its existence and forming a vacuum for the human mind to wonder, speculate, and, perhaps most commonly of all, to project its fears and dreams.

Indeed, the famous Swiss psychologist Carl Jung pioneered this view in his 1959 book Flying Saucers. Jung argued that the “strange contents” of the UFO enigma “cannot be integrated directly [into the psyche] but seek to express themselves indirectly” and as a result “[gives] rise to unexpected and apparently inexplicable opinions, beliefs, illusions [and] visions.”

The UFO had become an aspect of human consciousness, a crack in the veritable mirror of our collective mind.

    Human Consciousness and its Symbols

“Human consciousness is not static,” says philosopher Jeremy Naydler, PhD. We might add neither is the UFO phenomenon. As the two intertwine, we are offered a unique glimpse into our evolutionary potential, and an opportunity to investigate and integrate not only the phenomenon’s import, but also those deepest parts of ourselves.

After over a decade studying ‘alien abduction’ experiences, Harvard psychologist John E. Mack, MD, discovered that such jarring and often traumatising experiences often led to witnesses and experiencers discovering a new “world of symbols and archetypes that take them far beyond the level of everyday psychological or material reality.” In other words, the UFO or abduction experience initiates a profound shift in human consciousness that has more in common with visionary indigenous shamanism or Christian and Indian mysticism, than with our scientific-materialistic worldview.

In his final work, Passport to the Cosmos (1999), Mack interviewed a UFO witness and abductee pseudonymously called ‘Sue’. She said that whatever intelligence is behind the phenomenon, it uses our culture’s symbols to draw attention to itself (or disguise itself) while simultaneously drawing us into examining our own preconceptions and consciousness. She stated there are “universal symbols” from what Jung called the collective unconscious, and there are also civilisation-specific symbols reflecting “whatever is in human consciousness at the time, whatever’s most appropriate.” A scientist, she argued, would perceive the UFO and its entities as engaged in a gigantic experiment, involving us biologically and physically, while a religious person would likely perceive them as angels on a spiritual mission.

The ‘abduction’ phenomenon associated with UFOs is what we might call its most inner experience, and the closest we come to understanding the deeper symbolic and psychological nature of the UFO. And more importantly, its relationship to consciousness.

Often, these abductions are reported to have an ultra-real quality and yet, paradoxically, they exhibit a ‘high-strangeness’ that frustrates our ordinary understanding of time, space and even meaning. Furthermore, ufologist Jacques Vallee noted direct similarities between the fairy folklore of Northern Europe and the UFO/abduction phenomenon. Both have strange lights, ‘missing time’ episodes, and reports of being taken into strange worlds with alien-like entities that appear to be occupied by bizarre and inexplicable activities, including the creation of a new race of human-fairy hybrids.

    The UFO and Cosmic Individuation

As we delve deeper into the mystery of consciousness, we meet the strange, the repressed, the uncanny, surrealistic and mythological. Entire new realities open before us, populated by unknown entities that we did not know to exist in our ordinary state of consciousness. Consciousness appears to be fundamental, even foundational. As attested by the strange and mind-bending world of quantum physics, it reaches right down to the very building blocks of reality itself.

Max Planck, the father of quantum physics and winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics, observed in 1931: “I regard consciousness as fundamental. I regard matter as derivative from consciousness. We cannot get behind consciousness. Everything that we talk about, everything that we regard as existing, postulates consciousness.”

The notion that our minds are part of a greater reality places each of us in what we could call “participation consciousness.” For not only do we effect the very subatomic substrate of all matter by simply observing it – proven in experiments by way of the observer effect in which particles only become particles upon the act of observation (technically known as wave function collapse) – we also participate in the themes and archetypes of our culture or what Jung called the “collective unconscious.”

The collective unconscious is essentially the myth-making mainframe underlying human consciousness. It shapes, informs and challenges the development of humanity’s collective psyche. As we have seen, it also appears to interpenetrate other realities with their respective ‘entities’ and independent intelligences. Through dreams, visions, mystical insights, and even alien ‘abductions’, these other modalities of consciousness provide a telescope into an inner universe rich and varied as our everyday reality.

In his remarkable book, Meaning in Absurdity, the Dutch computer scientist and philosopher Bernardo Kastrup [see his interview on page 9 of this issue] provides an exciting theory that bridges the gap between the complex world of quantum physics and deeper realities found in the depths of human consciousness:

[I]nsofar as reality is a reflection of the psyche and the process it undergoes, we must confront the startling implication: nature itself must undergo a kind of “cosmological individuation” by means of which unconscious meta-realities progressively emerge in awareness and get absorbed into consensus meta-reality.

Kastrup posits that the UFO is a fundamental part of our cultural myth-making process, and as an instrumentality essential for our “cosmological individuation.” The UFO may represent the unconscious aspect of our culture – the rejected, the Other, the mysterious. Our bewilderment is due to a blind spot built into the reductive, scientific-materialistic paradigm. Our struggles to understand the phenomenon reflects precisely our stresses to integrate and absorb its sheer implications, while its presence grows by deliberately frustrating the limits of our worldview.

Novelist Ian Watson offers an excellent demonstration of what he calls “UFO Consciousness” in Miracle Visitors (1978). For Watson the UFO is not simply a physical event but an evolutionary agent working closely alongside human evolution. Although Watson writes science fiction, the novel sketches out a remarkably grand theory of both the UFO mystery and the nature of evolution.

Reflecting on the phenomenon’s evolutionary implications, the novel’s protagonist focuses on the absurdity and sheer strangeness that often accompanies the anomalous, which he calls its “inaccessibilities,” noting these frustrations of logic may cause “a fierce suction towards ever higher patterns of organisation, towards higher compression.” He continues, using the example of biological evolution for the formation of mind:

So molecules become long-chain molecules, and these became replicating cells that transmitted information… till mind evolved, and higher mind. The universe, he realised, was an immense simulation: of itself, by itself. It was a registering of itself, a progressive observation of itself from ever higher points of view. Each higher order was inaccessible to a lower order, yet each lower order was drawn towards the higher – teased by the suction of the higher.

Human consciousness is involved in an ascent towards more self-awareness and self-directed evolution. According to some quantum physicists, and thinkers like Kastrup and Watson, the universe is consciousness, and we humans represent one of nature’s most formidable spearheads into the world of matter. With our growing awareness of the fundamental, ever-present nature of consciousness, we are slowly actualising Kastrup’s “cosmological individuation” in which humanity realises that consciousness is primary, before matter, and not merely a random epiphenomenon of biological evolution.

In The Holotropic Mind, psychologist Stanislav Grof, MD cites the remarkable case of a philosophy professor who entered a non-ordinary state of consciousness and met with a mysterious Council of Cosmic Elders. Describing this collective ‘intelligence’ as responsible for our entire universe, he relates how this intelligence must teach the human being how to receive its knowledge. He then says: “Since this intelligence is nothing other than your own being, it is a matter of learning how to be awake at more and more levels of ‘your’ own being, or Being itself.”

One of the world’s most famous UFO witnesses and abductees, Whitley Strieber, once stated that the whole phenomenon may be what the “force of evolution looks like when it is applied to a conscious mind.”

The implications are staggering and wide-ranging. Why does the phenomenon take these guises? How do we better “integrate” its threatening aspects, as Daniel Pinchbeck pointed out at the beginning of this article? And what larger implications does this have for human existence?

    A Convergence of Worlds

While researching my book on the UFO phenomenon, Evolutionary Metaphors, I turned to many of the classic works in the field and sought out satisfying theoretical models to answer this truly anomalous incursion into our culture. The more I read, the more human consciousness became my focus.

Each witness, abductee, or psychologist like Carl Jung, John E. Mack and Stanislav Grof, emphasise our modern culture’s limitations in regard to the human mind’s relationship to the cosmos. Our scientific culture treats consciousness as far too passive. Its methodology rejects human-centric visions as mere subjectivism and does away with any notion that the universe is intrinsically meaningful. Of course, positing that the cosmos is meaningless can also be regarded as a projection, an assumption. This is a quandary that the philosopher Richard Tarnas amusingly called our “hubris of cosmic proportions.”

The UFO phenomenon’s connection to consciousness seems fundamental due to its disregard of our epistemological and ontological boundaries, as it frustrates, turns inside out, and crosses beyond the thresholds of everyday believability. The entities or aliens associated with the mystery often exhibit miraculous powers and extra-sensory perception. Mack commented that it “represents a kind of return of the repressed that is ‘designed’… to break down this separation” between two worlds – seen and unseen – and allow us glimpses into a far richer reality of significance, mystery, and meaning.

Studies of UFOs often point to the inadequacy of our conceptual models and that our political, ecological, spiritual, and scientific paradigms are all back-to-front. The reason for its steady presence in our culture may be a calling card for us to address these limitations. But paradigm shifts are slow, and for decades we have attempted to fit the UFO into pre-existing categories. The result is we are consistently left unsatisfied and baffled when new and stranger evidence turns up.

This story has turned in the direction of the mysterious and unknown – towards unseen dimensions and deeper aspects of human consciousness. If the UFO has taken up a disguise, then it may be precisely in aspects of reality and the human mind that we have rejected. Almost dutifully, this persistent mystery keeps exhibiting cases that cannot be explained in our present paradigms. The problem of integration therefore becomes a problem of our evolution, for only when we make the leap into a new way of seeing, a new way of being, may our consciousness untangle the mystifying and sometimes terrifying logic of the phenomenon.

The human mind appears to be multi-storeyed, with a basement and an attic with a view out onto the entire universe; that we are intimately connected is evidenced in quantum physics. At the same time, we exist in a culture that emphasises a passive form of human consciousness. A belief, nevertheless, that is slowly being eroded by our growing recognition of the fundamental relationship of consciousness to reality itself.

In this context, we can consider the UFO as a symbol within the vast spectrum of consciousness, beckoning us to investigate ourselves, our culture, and our presumptions about reality. Perhaps the connection between the two – the UFO & Consciousness – is the bridgeway not only into ourselves but also toward an entirely new paradigm that recognises consciousness as foundational to existence as the Sun is to life on Earth.

Shamans, mystics, occultists, and even revolutionary psychologists recognise that the human mind pans out into worlds unseen. Our role may be to evolve and breach the constricting barriers of an outdated worldview. For one day, when human consciousness blossoms into the super-spectrum of realities seen and unseen, we too could become walkers between worlds, to appear like mysterious lights in the heavens.

  • Flying Saucers, Hidden Empire & the Secret of World Control

Flying Saucers, Hidden Empire & the Secret of World Control

From New Dawn Special Issue Vol 6 No 5 (October 2012)

Back in 1958 the Essene Press in Texas published an intriguing little book entitled UFOs Confidential: The meaning behind the most closely guarded secrets of all time.

The authors George Hunt Williamson and John McCoy were closely involved in the 1950s UFO contactee phenomenon. In fact George Hunt Williamson was a pioneering UFO researcher and one of the “four guys named George” among the famous contactees of the 50s. The others were George Adamski, George King, and George Van Tassel.

Williamson had “witnessed” George Adamski’s historic encounter with an extraterrestrial from Venus on 20 November 1952. He also received messages from “Space intelligences” by way of radio telegraphy as well as the Ouija board, and wrote several widely read books on Flying Saucers among them Other Tongues-Other Flesh, Road in the Sky, Secret Places of the Lion and The Saucers Speak! He developed many of the themes of modern UFOlogy and was the first to present what is today referred to as the “ancient astronaut theory.” Independent researcher Alec Hiddell, in his article “Tracks in the Desert,” says Williamson wrote “the most remarkable UFO documents ever conceived.”

But Hiddell points out that while George Hunt Williamson was a prolific writer on the theme of contact with extraterrestrial intelligences:

It would however, be a capital error to classify him solely as a UFO researcher. He was above all an occultist whose activities helped to usher in a new magical aeon – the aeon of the Flying Saucer. No attempt can be made to understand him or his work unless this fact is first taken into account.

    International Bankers

George Hunt Williamson and John McCoy believed the reason governments refuse to acknowledge UFOs and the visitors from other worlds is due to the machinations of a “Hidden Empire” of international bankers. As they explain in UFO Confidential:

Many people have asked the inevitable question: ‘If visitors from other worlds are here, why doesn’t our government inform us of such a momentous event?’ The reason is obvious… all governments, yes all, are under the complete control of the ‘International Bankers’ who also control all money and thus create depressions and prosperity whenever they want it. They want and need a divided world so that wars may continue and their wealth steadily increase.

    According to Williamson and McCoy:

These secret world rulers will never allow official UFO announcements to be made public. If they did allow it, it would spell their doom. If the technology of the space visitors is revealed it will immediately eliminate the need for oil, gas, automobiles, and practically everything else that drains the public….

Although written over fifty years ago and reflecting widespread anxieties of the post World War II period, a good many of the ideas set-forth in UFOs Confidential remain with us today. Nowhere is this clearer than in the chapter headed “The Drama of Earth’s Great Delusion.”

Surprisingly, it is not too difficult to see several parallels between life in the 1950s, when UFOs Confidential first appeared, and our own time. Back then, in the Cold War era, the subversive ‘enemy’ of the so-called ‘free world’ was Soviet communism. Today the Cold War is a vague memory and we’re told a global ‘War on Terror’ is necessary to safeguard ‘freedom’. In the 21st century ‘Al Qaeda’ and ‘Terrorism’ have now replaced the Soviet Union and communism as the ‘enemies of freedom’.

The extract on the opposite page is from Part II of UFOs Confidential – “The Drama of Earth’s Great Delusion” – where John McCoy poses the question, “If you wanted to absolutely control a world, how would you go about it?”

    Hidden Empire

In Other Tongues-Other Flesh, George Hunt Williamson discusses the role of the “Hidden Empire” in concealing information from the public about extraterrestrial intelligences. He again poses the often asked question, “Why haven’t the ‘powers that be’ announced what they know about the Flying Saucers?”

“If they acknowledge extraterrestrial origin,” Williamson writes, “it would mean that they must acknowledge extraterrestrial allegiance as well. There would be extraterrestrial interference with established government, and no world power would welcome such a situation. If Universal truth came to the people of Earth, their schemes and plans for mankind would crumble. No longer could they exploit the masses.”

George Hunt Williamson was indeed a man ahead of his time. His books discuss everything from the nature of life on earth, Mayan mysteries, environmental collapse and the secret plan for global government, to the identity of UFOs and the dawn of the Aquarian New Age. Over fifty years ago, Williamson received the following astonishing message from a higher intelligence.

The United Nations must collapse because that which you read from the Nostradamus forces is true. The war lords, the ‘International Bankers’ will use the United Nations to form their super-government. This will not be. There are no Christ forces in the United Nations. That does not mean that there are not some good people who are in the United Nations. But the organisation itself is a centre, using gullible people. I say it is demon controlled and must go down. The Master has said, and it is written in Corinthians by our beloved Paul: ‘All forms of authority and power must be put down before I come.’ And the United Nations fits that category.

Everybody wants the New Age, but they want it to be an American New Age, or a British New Age, or a Communistic New Age. I say that all forms of government will collapse. Every seat of government will fall utterly and completely. Every economic system will be eliminated. All forms of authority which are under the direct guidance and tutelage of the Black Dragon will perish.

As for his native United States of America, Williamson was warned:

I speak strongly because I feel strongly. I am perturbed at the entire situation that is taking place in the United States of America… What is this statement that the United States will be spared? The United States will be submerged… The United States is the centre for the darkest forces upon the Planet Earth.

These messages were published in 1958 by Neville Spearman Ltd under the title Secret of the Andes. The London publishers had received the original manuscript from South America where George Hunt Williamson was then resident at the Monastery of the Brotherhood of the Seven Rays in Peru. Due to its highly controversial nature, Neville Spearman edited out about a quarter of the manuscript. The revelations were apparently too startling to appear in print at the time.

Famed parapsychologist Andrija Puharich, best known for popularising the Israeli psychic Uri Geller, had a chance encounter in Mexico with one of George Hunt Williamson’s associates, a Dr. Charles Laughhead. Laughhead described Williamson as “a very fine voice channel or medium,” who had “been in frequent communication for over a year with one of the ancient Mystery Schools in South America.”

Dr. Laughhead related to Puharich how:

These sessions covered a wide range of subjects, from ancient history and life origins on this planet, to science and religion. This Brotherhood also has a communication centre for contacts with intelligences on other planets and star systems, and on spacecraft. Some of these intelligences are obviously not human… Their knowledge and wisdom far exceed our comprehension. For simplicity we referred to them as Space Beings or Space Brothers…

George Hunt Williamson continued to travel on expeditions to many parts of the world, conducting his research largely in private, and out of public view. He reportedly passed away in California in 1986, at the age of 60.

“He was among the first to connect all those dots and draw us a believable picture of the chariots of the gods in action,” noted UFO journalist Sean Casteel. Alec Hiddell identifies Williamson as one of the small group of men from whom “the contemporary UFO mythos first grew and took shape.”
