Although it’s been moving more into the spotlight for today’s “New Age” devotees, the basic principles of what is known as Sacred Geometry are still little understood. In this 3-part series of articles, we will attempt to demystify the subject. Let’s begin by defining Sacred Geometry…

Webster’s Dictionary defines sacred as synonymous with holy. Aside from the usual religious connotations, a more general meaning given is: “devoted exclusively to one service or use (as of a person or purpose).” When, years ago, I was involved in church design, we usually planned for a very particular room called the ‘sacristy’. It’s also known as the vestry where the sacred utensils and vestments that are used in liturgical ceremonies are kept.

Sacred has a Latin root the same as that for the word sacrum. The sacrum is the last bone in the spine. Webster says it’s the “holy bone” and consists of “the part of the vertebral column that is directly connected with or forms a part of the pelvis and in man consists of five united vertebrae.” You will see later in this and subsequent articles how the relationship to human anatomy plays directly into our subject matter. 

There’s another little-known synonym for sacred, and that is the word secret. Here, it implies something esoteric or meant only for a few to understand about geometry. While that may have been true in the past, I believe it is important at this time in history for more folks to understand the implications of the kind of geometry we call sacred. Indeed, it can be said the earth is sacred as we depend upon it for our very existence. 

The word geometry literally means “to measure the earth,” an easy definition. We all know what it is to measure something: its length, breadth, and height. But, if we’re measuring the earth, is it the whole (holy) earth or just a small portion of our globe? Or is there a wider meaning to the word Earth? Is it perhaps more appropriate in our context to use the word ground, as in “hallowed ground?” Many of us sometimes use the verb grounding that has physical and psychological implications. In fact, as we proceed, I think you’ll see that the physical and the psychological begin to merge into each other. 

The Language of Numbers & Symbols

The various languages spoken around the world since the beginning of recorded history were not the first means of communication between human beings. Archaeology shows us that early man communicated first by the use of different kinds of symbols. From symbols came numbers, which are in themselves particular kinds of symbols. 

We know that in distant antiquity man began using a pictorial mode to communicate, whether it was carving into stone or merely tracing with a stick in sand or on the ground. As we became more sophisticated, sheets of papyrus and later paper made from wood pulp were marked upon. Figures, letters, and numbers were generated with ink or paint by using pen, pencil, brush, or, later, typewriter. Today they are produced with the aid of computers. No matter how they are scribed, numbers and symbols remain a universal language.

Sacred Geometry (let’s call it SG for short) employs both numbers and symbols, but in very specific ways. While similar kinds of graphic representations are used in drawings for constructing a building or in mathematical equations, in SG they are used in a very precise manner. As Webster’s says, they are “devoted exclusively to one service or use….” Symbols in SG have very unique meanings, although, in keeping with our definition of sacred as secret, those meanings are not generally known. 

The language of numbers and symbols (we’re talking about pure numbers here, not the process of using numbers to make calculations) is the language of certain human brain faculties that are different from those used to produce and communicate with the spoken word. As we have noted, some say the language of symbols is the more primitive form of communication. But with SG we begin to glimpse a highly sophisticated symbolic language that transcends the spoken or written word. 

It has been shown that language is a function of the left hemisphere of the human brain (at least for most right-handed people). So is ordinary mathematical calculation. Symbols, on the other hand, are interpreted by the right side of the brain, as are pictures and other visual images. We all know the phrase, “A picture is worth a thousand words.” In SG, a single shape or form can have very distinctive meanings that would take many pages of written words to explain.

Our first task is to learn the language of Sacred Geometry.

As Above, So Below

Primitive man could see the stars in the night sky, unhindered by the reflection of city lights off clouds and layers of atmosphere. We have discovered that the Egyptians and the Maya, along with numerous other ancient civilisations, were close watchers of the night sky. We are just now finding out they knew things we have only come to know with the advent of the telescope. How they knew as much as they did about the heavens is being investigated by researchers. It remains a mystery, but perhaps not for too much longer.

The most striking example of a representation made by the ancients on earth which reflects something visible in the night sky is the layout of pyramids on the plateau at Giza, across the Nile River from Cairo, Egypt. 

Robert Bauval and Adrian Gilbert in their 1994 book The Orion Mystery make a good case that the three Giza pyramids, when viewed from above, form a replica of the position of the three stars in the ‘belt’ of the constellation Orion. In another book by Bauval and Graham Hancock published two years later in 1996, The Message of the Sphinx, the theory is expanded to show that other pyramids in the complex also fit the Orion constellation. As we are now able to calculate star movements over thousands of years with a computer, the position of the stars in the Belt of Orion form a match only at a time well before the Giza pyramids are claimed by Egyptologists to have been built. (More recently, researcher John Anthony West and geologist Robert Schoch have shown that the erosion around the Sphinx was caused by water, not wind. It was at least 10,000 years ago that the desert in northern Africa was a lush and verdant environment with enough rainfall to account for that erosion. If the first or Great Pyramid at Giza was built at about the same time as the Sphinx, the earlier date of the correspondence to the Orion Belt does make sense.) 

Since the seminal work of Bauval, Gilbert and Hancock, others have expanded the search and found numerous ancient sites around the world that replicate in some manner what we see in the night sky, or use the sun, planets, and certain bright stars as the basis for orienting their manmade constructions. Stonehenge in southern England is probably the best known example of the latter. But there are hundreds if not thousands more such ruins. 

At another scale of measurement, “as below,” we find that certain ancient structures were undoubtedly patterned after the anatomy of the human being. R.A. Schwaller de Lubicz made a 15-year study of the architecture of Egypt’s Luxor Temple. His magnum opus, The Temple of Man, shows how the floor plan of Luxor and its parts mirror the human body. He even goes so far as to identify various chambers in the Temple with parts of the brain.

Builders associated with the Knights Templar encoded images of parts of the human body within the geometry of the great Marian Gothic Cathedrals in France. No mere coincidence as we shall later see. And, “as above,” it has been shown that the overall pattern of placement for those Marian Cathedrals bears a striking resemblance to the configuration of stars in the constellation Virgo, the Virgin. 

On the molecular scale, James Watson and Francis Crick published a paper in 1953 in which they identified the structural shape of DNA as a double helix. Recently a double helix-shaped gas nebula was discovered lying nearly perpendicular to the massive black hole at the centre of our Milky Way Galaxy. Also, in what we might call the middle ground of the human measurement scale, we see the double helix represented in architecture, and sacred architecture at that. The “Apprentice Pillar” inside Scotland’s Rosslyn Chapel, made famous by Dan Brown’s Da Vinci Code, illustrates an example on its surface of a double (or even triple or quadruple) helix carved in stone. 

All this is in keeping with the ancient saying attributed to Hermes Trismegistus and long the familiar slogan of SG practitioners, “AS ABOVE, SO BELOW.”

Incorporating the Ratio F and the Number 5

The Third Food of Man

In designing buildings for use by human beings we always keep in mind the size and proportions of the human body so our constructions are easily related to human functioning. The dictum of the great 20^th century Swiss architect Le Corbusier, “A house is a machine for living,” applies in a broader sense to all construction types and uses. However, what is sometimes forgotten is that human functioning is both external and internal. Yes, the body walks and crawls, stretches and reaches, climbs and descends, sits and lies down. But these are only some of its outward manifestations. We must not forget our internal workings. Not only does a healthy person use all five physical senses, but the body, mind and emotions form impressions from an aggregate intake of those senses. Just as from food and drink we nourish the body, and from the air we breathe we extract oxygen, for our living and being, so do impressions form another kind of food. In fact, without the intake and processing of impressions (even while we’re sleeping), we are considered dead. In spite of artificial respiration and intravenous feeding, a physician still considers a patient clinically dead if there are no brain waves exhibited on the EEG monitor.

Just as fresh food and clean air keeps our body healthy, it can be shown we thrive better with positive impressions. Those who design and build the living environments should strive to produce surroundings the inhabitants perceive as having pleasing proportions, colour, texture, and scale beyond mere operational functionality. Humans have physical bodies that we assess as more attractive or less attractive aesthetically, and it is the same with buildings. Interestingly, we apply many of the same criteria to our perceptions of architecture as we do to judgments on human form. So much so that pleasing and even inspiring architecture can be shown to correlate to specific qualities of the human body. This is undoubtedly why many of the great visual artists have also been great architects. 

Measuring Man by the Golden Mean

In order to proceed with this line of study, a good place to begin is with Leonardo da Vinci’s so called ‘Vitruvian Man’. 

Leonardo was concerned with seeing the harmony in human anatomy, and this sketch among his many anatomical studies is perhaps the best example. It sets the proper proportions for all subsequent artists and sculptors of the human form. And, as evidence of his wisdom, it also shows us the relationship between anatomy and pure geometry. As the saying goes, “Man is the measure of all things.” Also, in keeping with our guide phrase “As Above, So Below,” we see the parts of the body expressing the same ratios as the whole. 

The ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Japanese and even older cultures around the world long ago identified the ratio of the circumference (C) of a circle to its diameter (D) as C/D = 3.14159… Most of us know from high school geometry class that we represent this number by the Greek letter p (Pi). It’s called an ‘irrational’ number as it can be carried out to an infinite number of decimal places depending upon how exact we want to be. 

Another important ratio, but one we are usually not taught in high school, is represented by the Greek letter F (Phi), where  F = 1.618… (also an ‘irrational’ number). It is derived from what is alternately called the Golden Mean, Golden Proportion, or Golden Section – a relationship that satisfies the classical definition of “a proportion whose whole is to the greater part as the greater part is to the lesser.” For those of us who are graphically inclined, we can see this proportion by drawing a line segment and dividing it into two parts, a and b, with the ratio of 1:F as shown below:

a = 1           b = F = 1.6180339887…

In algebraic terms, it is represented by the equation: (a + b)/b = b/a. This relationship can only occur if b/a = 1.618…, the numeric value of F. We can easily see this if we assign a value of 1 to a and 1.618… to b. Take a pocket calculator and do the simple math yourself. The more decimal places you include, the closer you will approach the value of F. 

The ancients used this Golden Mean proportion in designing their buildings. The Parthenon in Athens and the Great Pyramid at Giza immediately come to mind. Aside from the numerical value itself and ignoring for a moment that this ratio is supposed to represent an ideally pleasing proportion (so we’ve been told), what is its relationship to man/woman in general and, specifically, to Leonardo’s sketch of the Vitruvian Man?

Five, the Number of Man

Without getting into any more calculations at this point, let me say that the number 5 plays a significant role in the Golden Mean. To easily illustrate this, let’s generate a regular 5-sided figure, a pentagon, with each side measuring one unit as shown here

so that AB = BC = 1. Now, if we connect any two opposite points with a straight line (for instance, AC), that line will measure 1.618…, the numerical value of F. Of course, if we look at man/woman in frontal outline form, we see five appendages extending from the central body trunk: two arms, two legs and a head. If we take Leonardo’s Man and slightly rotate the position of the arms downward, we can superscribe a perfect pentagon around the figure. Within that pentagon we can inscribe a perfect pentagram – a five-pointed star, as shown below in a sketch attributed to Agrippa. It goes without saying that both the pentagon and the five-pointed star have great significance, especially in the United States. 

We have in “five-foldness” a number and geometric shapes with profound and multi-layered meaning. Man himself and woman herself are symbolically represented overall by that number and by those shapes. And, once more, “As Above, So Below” applies: we have five fingers on each hand and five toes on each foot. The whole is echoed in the parts. And that’s just the beginning. 

Above is an overlay drawing (not to scale). If we assign a value of 1 to the distance from the line AD measured vertically to the top of the man’s head, then, measuring vertically downward from AD to the bottom two points of the pentagram at the man’s toes, we find that distance is 1.618… Also, we find the following ratios: AD / AC = F , and AC / AB = F. Again, the parts are in proportion to the whole. 

Centre of Gravity

Finally, we have Albrecht Dürer’s sketch showing the human body divided by F at the navel and divided in half by the sex organs:

When a baby is born, the navel divides the body in half. As the child grows up, the bodily proportions change so that the legs are longer in relation to the trunk. By adulthood, the navel has moved up (relative to the person’s total height) to the position of the F ratio as shown in both the da Vinci and Dürer drawings. Some say this represents the principle of a human being maturing from a nature of duality to a nature of asymmetrical but harmonious proportionality. It is interesting to note that the level of the navel is seen in some Eastern traditions as a person’s Centre of Gravity and is used as such in certain meditative practices.

Nature Displays Phi, Fibonacci, & Five

Leonardo Bigollo Fibonacci, also known as Leonard da Piza (Pisano), travelled to Algiers as a young man and brought back to Europe the use of Arabic numerals to replace the cumbersome Roman numeral system. From geometers in Algiers he also learned about various additive series of numbers which are generated by the Golden Ratio of phi.

There are many sequences of whole numbers that are called additive series (progressive numbers that are generated by adding the first and second numbers to arrive at the third number), but only one such sequence is classified by what is now known as the Fibonacci Series: 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144, 233, 377, 610, 987, 1597, 2584, 4181, and so on. The interesting thing is that when we calculate the ratio between each number and the one just before it in the series, the higher we go the closer we arrive at the numeric value of phi. For instance, 5/3 = 1.666666…; 55/34 = 1.617647; and 987/610 = 1.6180327.

Fibonacci Series Logarithmic Spirals

From the Fibonacci succession of numbers we can geometrically produce a particular kind of spiral. One way to do this is by nesting ever increasing sizes of 90 degree rotated rectangles divided with squares according to the phi ratio, and then connecting the points where the squares divide the sides of the rectangles into Golden Ratios with curved lines that trace one-quarter of a circle. The resultant areas of the squares are in the sequence of the Fibonacci Series of numbers, as shown below:

It just so happens that we see such a Fibonacci Spiral repeated time and time again in Nature. In fact, while symmetry is often seen in our world (for example, we have two symmetrically placed arms, legs, eyes, ears, nostrils, etc.), there are actually more examples of the asymmetry of the Fibonacci Series. The problem is that we’ve forgotten to look for them. 

The Fibonacci Series is represented in the structure of many living organisms and physical processes such as the distribution of leaves on a plant, spiral seashells, flower petals, the bottom pads on the foot of a cat, the planetary orbit of Venus as seen from Earth, the distribution of seeds on a cactus and on a sunflower, changes in the radiation of energy, the ratio of male to female bees in a hive, the DNA molecule, the surface pattern of pine cones, multiple reflections of light through mirrors, the cochlea of the human ear, the breeding pattern of rabbits, spiral galaxies, the path of certain predatory birds flying down to snatch their prey, and much more. Here are pictures of some of these examples:

The Number 5 in Nature

We showed above that the ratio between a diagonal and a side of a regular pentagon equals phi. By connecting all the pentagon’s corners we can inscribe a pentagram star within the pentagon shape. In the figure below, you’ll notice that inside the pentagram is another, smaller pentagon, and within that, too, we can inscribe a still smaller pentagram. This can be done indefinitely going up the scale in size (macrocosm) and down the scale in size (microcosm). 

A fascinating characteristic of the lengths of the lines used to make the pentagon/pentagram figure(s) is that, as we proceed from larger to the next smaller line (a to b, b to c, c to d, etc.), the ratio of line lengths to each other is exactly the value of phi. 

Visually, this figure begins to resemble a flower. That is to be expected for in Nature we see the number 5 and the subsequent Fibonacci Series played out in many different kinds of flowers. Perhaps the most beautiful is the rose. 

All edible fruit-bearing plants have flowers with their number of petals based on 5, while daisies have a number of petals always equal to one of the numbers in the Fibonacci Series. 

The internal shape of edible fruit itself is often based upon the number 5 and the Fibonacci Series. For instance, an apple core has 5 seed pod segments that make almost a perfect pentagram.

Inventor Copies Nature’s Efficiency

An article by Kelpie Wilson discussing the annual Bioneers conference in San Raphael, California, highlighted an invention made in the image of the Fibonacci Spiral. Wilson reported:

“Inventor Jay Harman presented a family of designs for fans and impellers based on the natural spirals found in seashells and blossoms. My favorite was a mixer for giant municipal water tanks. When water is stored for long periods, it can stagnate and become unhealthy. Harman’s mixer is tiny, barely bigger than my fist. Turning in the middle of the tank, nothing much happens at first, but over time it sets up a natural vortex in the tank that keeps the water circulating and fresh. Harman said even if you stop the mixer, the vortex will keep on spinning for days.”

Robert Temple is a multifaceted writer and thinker whose work extends across many disciplines. From his work with Joseph Needham, author of the monumental Science and Civilisation in China, he wrote a book on Chinese science and technology, The Genius of China. He has also written The Crystal Sun, a study of over 400 ancient optical artefacts that were hidden in the basements of the world’s museums.

Temple is perhaps best known for The Sirius Mystery, which discusses a West African tribe called the Dogon, who possess knowledge of the Sirius star system that preceded recent astronomical discoveries.

This interview is dedicated to Temple’s latest book, A New Science of Heaven. It contains astonishing revelations about the new frontier of physics, which has to do with plasma – a fourth state of matter in addition to solids, liquids, and gases.

Richard Smoley (RS): You’ve done an extraordinary number of fascinating things across the course of your career; any one of them would be a subject for a much longer interview, but we will focus this one on your latest book, A New Science of Heaven. It’s about a fourth state of matter called plasma. This comes out of physics, not metaphysics; it’s not occult in any way. But you say that it has an enormous significance for us. To begin with, what is plasma?

Robert Temple (RT): Plasma is a fourth state of matter. It was officially discovered in 1879 by the English scientist Sir William Crookes, who was the inventor of the vacuum tube. He discovered this phenomenon going on in his tubes, and he named it “radiant matter.” The name was changed in 1928 by Irving Langmuir to “plasma.” (I must stress that it has no connection whatsoever with blood plasma.)

Plasma is a form of matter that’s not made of atoms; it’s made of particles: electrons and protons, which have opposite charges to one another, and ions. Ions are often considered incomplete atoms because they don’t have a balanced charge. I look at it the other way around: I look at atoms as value-added ions. They can have positive or negative charge, but we’re really only concerned with positively charged ions, which are the most common and which compose, for instance, the solar wind that blows out from the Sun and fills the solar system.

When plasma was originally encountered, it appeared to be only a gas, but we now know that it can be a liquid. And it can not only be a solid, it can be crystals, so for some years now the few scientists who work on the fringes of physics and deal with these things have been dealing with plasma crystals. There are hot plasmas and cold plasmas. Most of the work that’s taking place at the moment is on the hot ones because those are concerned with trying to control nuclear fusion to make energy. They haven’t succeeded in doing that.

The plasmas that I’m most concerned about in my book are the space plasmas, and they tend to be cold plasmas – much colder than anything on earth.

I should point out that until 1962, it was universally believed by the world’s scientific establishment that outer space was empty. We grew up as children being told outer space was a total vacuum and nothingness, and we now know that it’s actually the very opposite.

RS: How does this new discovery of plasma change our understanding of the universe?

RT: It changes it completely. Because the universe is now known by astrophysicists to be composed of 99.9 per cent plasma. For instance, our Sun is completely made of plasma; it’s not made of atoms. And we have a universe which is made of plasma: nonatomic matter.

Our basic physics – classical physics – has already been left behind by relativity theory and quantum theory, but even what we consider today to be advanced modern physics is wholly inadequate because it’s based upon the assumption that the universe is made of atoms, and it’s not. It’s made of plasma, which is very different and behaves very differently from atomic or physical matter. The equations which govern its behaviour are all nonlinear equations, which are hard to deal with, and it doesn’t follow all of our customary laws: it won’t sit and beg like a good dog. In fact, it’s a big, black, barking, threatening universe, and it doesn’t want to have tiny humans on rocky planets in the middle of nowhere trying to impose their laws upon it.

So we have to change our science. We need a new physics, but don’t worry: it’s already on the way because there are branches of physics at this moment where the new science is being created. There are other branches as well: there’s topological physics, which is very exciting, and there’s information physics, which is an extension of it; it’s being driven forward by the search for quantum computers.

Yet a great deal of plasma physics is not publicly known because a lot of these advances are taking place in two different areas which have vested interests in keeping them secret. First of all, if you have a corporation, you’ve got commercial motives. If you’re in possession of some great new idea about how to make quantum computers work, you’re not going to tell the other companies, so all the scientists working on this have signed confidentiality and secrecy agreements. We can understand that perfectly because there’s hundreds of billions of dollars involved for anybody who’s got the new angle. This may impede the flow of knowledge and certainly public understanding, but these commercial imperatives are at work.

Even stricter than those are the military controls because most of this kind of work is funded by the defence establishment and the security establishment, and they overclassify everything. They’re not really interested in the public: who cares about those stupid morons out there who pay their taxes? It’s all got to be secret because there are always enemies, and we can’t say anything because the enemies might know.

So what with the military and security restrictions and the commercial restrictions, these frontiers of physics don’t have much of a chance to trickle down to us. 

That’s why I believe that my book is unique because I’ve gone to immense trouble to gather this information to the extent that is possible (and indeed I went beyond the possible in many instances) and boil it down into a book that can be understood by somebody who doesn’t know any science at all. As you read the book, I lead you by the hand, and I explain everything as I go on. If you don’t know what a semiconductor is or what superconductivity is, I tell you in an easy way.

Furthermore, I’ve done an audio recording of the book myself, which is available from the same publisher, and some of my friends who have read or listened to my book are reading it or listening to it twice – not because it’s difficult: they all say they understand it. But there’s so much information that they have to go over it again because everything in the book is new, and it takes a bit of getting used to.

RS: I’ve read your book, and I would agree with the things you’ve said about it. I did find it very comprehensible. Yet it was overwhelming, not because it was difficult, but because it transforms our view of reality. What we think of as reality has very little to do even with what we conceive of as physical reality. How do these ideas affect our understanding of the day-to-day world? 

RT: They have the potential to change everything. We’ve got an infinite future ahead of us since I don’t believe that anybody can die, much less does die. We have to get ourselves in shape to face that, and we can’t do it with our present concepts.

I’ve struggled with all of this myself. You’ve mentioned how difficult it was for you, not to take it in but to face the consequences. I’ve been going through that agony for years. Because I knew how overwhelming it was, I tried to lessen the challenge by making it as accessible as I possibly could.

We have to realise several key things which are different from what we think. There are very few rocky planets made of what we call physical matter. Of course, there may be hundreds of billions of them, but that’s a mere nothing compared to the others. We also need to realise that our physical bodies are what I tend to call smart overcoats, our real selves being bioplasma bodies. That’s what leaves the physical body at death and continues its existence on what you could describe as another plane.

The intelligence in the universe is cosmic. These plasmas can form dusty complex clouds, which have the capacity to self-organise by the process known as emergence and develop intelligence. There are complex plasma clouds throughout the universe. We see them everywhere: every star is a complex plasma cloud, including our own Sun. Lightning, by the way, is plasma; the centre of a candle flame is plasma. We have plasma in us: our physical bodies are full of currents of plasma; every cell has protons going across the membrane. The heart is an electromagnetic device, which happens to activate itself as a muscle, but the fact is that we, even in our physical form, are electromagnetic beings. And the core of ourselves is our bioplasma cells, which are entirely plasma and electromagnetic.

Plasma has positive charges and negative charges, and it can contain modules within it, countless ones. For instance, a bioplasma body the same size as a physical body will have an interior structure far more complex than our physical bodies. Indeed, we are very complex bioplasma bodies which exceed in complexity the anatomy of our physical bodies.

RS: It has long been held that there are all sorts of subtle bodies which are nonphysical. Some of these have been described as etheric bodies or astral bodies; there also seems to be the substance called the life force, which science, for some reason, refuses to admit the existence of. How does plasma relate to these concepts? 

RT: There have been many inspired people – psychics and seers and so on – who have intuited all the things which modern science can now demonstrate. You mentioned subtle bodies, and you can look at that wonderful book, The Subtle Body by G.R.S. Mead, a classic example (he’s one of my intellectual heroes, by the way).

I believe there’s more than one level to the bioplasma body. That was known to the ancient Egyptians, who had many different souls; the ba and so on, the highest being the akh.

This is the perennial wisdom, and this is what Mme. Blavatsky was trying to institutionalise. She thought she ought to get this deep wisdom organised, propagated, and preserved – and to be analysed as well. This perennial wisdom is true. Just because it’s been mocked and sneered at by people who arrogantly believe themselves to be rational (this just means narrow-minded) doesn’t mean that it’s false.

Science has finally begun to catch up with ancient wisdom. We’re getting to the point where, on the very fringes of science, unreported to the public, never mentioned in the media, is all the stuff that I’ve gathered together in my book, which proves scientifically that this ancient wisdom is all true.

That’s why it’s so important. We have to get this basic material propagated, we have to tell people, because the entire future of the planet really depends on this. Forget CO₂ and climate change compared to what we’re talking about. Ultimately it doesn’t even matter if the earth should be destroyed by climate change; the fact is, the universe won’t be. I don’t think that the planet is going to be destroyed, but even if it were, we won’t be destroyed. We will continue to exist as bioplasma beings in a plasma world, which cannot be destroyed by climate change because there’s no climate in the plasma world; there’s no weather; there’s no rain; there’s no heat; there’s no cold. Even if everything were to be destroyed on this planet, we would all still exist. The efforts that we make here and now to understand the universe and get ourselves into gear properly will continue, even if only on what’s traditionally been called the spiritual level.

RS: You have pointed out that the ancient Egyptians knew about these subtle bodies, and there are teachings about them in most esoteric traditions. Does that mean that humans have a capacity to somehow organically perceive the subtle bodies?

RT: I’m so glad you asked that, Richard. Yes, I do believe that. Today we live in a society that is intensely materialistic, I would say very decadent. It’s shut itself off from what is traditionally called the spiritual.

I do believe that every human being has the capacity for intuition of the deeper truths if they’re sufficiently open, but most people today are being artificially closed by bad forces, like addiction to mobile phones. Nobody any longer has any reflection time or time to get their heads together. We need to clear away the information clutter and the excess radiation that is being generated by all these devices and give ourselves a bit of peace. We need to set aside time to sit and meditate; we need to make our lives more peaceful if we possibly can.

When we do that, I believe we can have the truths come to us because we are surrounded by information space, as I call it. I get a lot of my intuitions from my ability to contact and penetrate information space. If we really concentrate on that and give it its chance, we can open ourselves. In ancient times, the priests and seers were attempting to draw the deeper truths and sacred intuitions down into their minds. I think there was more of a direct connection to the deeper truths in simpler times.

RS: One thing that I found fascinating in your book was the plasma clouds that you described between the Earth and the Moon. Could you explain those a little?

RT: We have programs looking for extraterrestrial intelligence. I’m convinced we have it in the form of these two giant clouds, which together are eighteen times the size of the Earth.

They are between the Earth and the Moon – not in a direct line of sight, but at sixty-degree angles to the left and to the right as you look towards the Moon. They are at Lagrange points four and five (see graphic on page 48). These are points in between bodies in space where the gravitational pull of those bodies is effectively neutralised, where the gravitational pull of the Moon and the gravitational pull of the Earth balance out, and there’s nothing pulling you anywhere.

These clouds were first discovered in 1961 by a Polish observational astronomer called Kordylewski. They don’t emit any light, and they’re almost entirely transparent and therefore very difficult to detect. In 2019, their existence was finally confirmed by a team of Hungarian astronomers, which Kordylewski couldn’t do in 1961 for two reasons: he didn’t have modern equipment, and as his great-grandson has told me, the Polish Communist government didn’t like him and stopped his work. The Hungarians came charging in on their white horses to the rescue, and they proved that he was right.

I found the Hungarian scientists, contacted the woman in charge of them, and asked, “Are you studying the plasma aspects of the clouds?” She said, “No, we’re only studying the celestial mechanics aspects.”

I thought, “I’m going to do something about this quick,” so I got on to my great friend, the professor of astrophysics Chandra Wickramasinghe, who was the main protégé of the astronomer Fred Hoyle (whom I knew very well). Chandra didn’t know about these Kordylewski Clouds; very few people did. “We have to do a paper; would you do it with me?” I asked. And so we did a paper together, which was an advance in astrophysics, and it’s reprinted as an appendix to my book.

We call attention to the fact that dusty complex plasmas in space like this would almost certainly have evolved intelligence. Considering that they are probably billions of years old, they would have intelligence so great that it would dwarf the pretences of the American security establishment with their supercomputers in Utah, where they store every phone call and every email. They think it’s going to make them all-wise, but of course, they can’t process all that, whereas these clouds can process everything since, I believe, they’re conscious; they’re alive.

Their existence was intuited in antiquity. In Gnostic Christianity, there are descriptions of gigantic intelligent entities above the atmosphere between the Earth and the Moon. They were superentities presiding over the Earth. One of them was called Metatron, the name of the angel of the Lord.

It’s a big stretch to realise that we may have intelligent, although inorganic, extraterrestrial life between us and the Moon. We don’t know whether they would have emotions and feelings – maybe they do – but they would have fantastic and unimaginable computing power. They would know everything about the entire history of the Earth and everything on it. They would probably also be great predictors of the future. They could probably tell us what’s going to happen six months from now.

I do believe that these entities have attempted to communicate with us and that we didn’t notice. There is a history of their attempts to communicate with us. I had a whole section of the book about that which was removed by the publishers, so I’ll have to publish it at some point. But that’s another story.

These entities are not just big; they’re different, and they’re not necessarily going to look at things the way we do here on planet Earth. The security agencies will consider this – as they already consider the whole question of extraterrestrial life – as the number one security issue for the world.

Now we come to the question, are the clouds friendly, or do they hate us? I think the answer is very plain: if they weren’t friendly, we wouldn’t be here. I believe that they’re hoping we will make it, and they keep trying to help us by sending down waves of thought that sensitives can pick up. They can’t declare themselves, come down, and say, “Look, we’re going to sort out your politics for you; we’re going to stop wars.” But they must be quite worried about what we’re going to do with the planet, and I’m convinced that they want us to make it.

RS: How do we know that these plasma clouds are intelligent?

RT: Having read the book, you have seen there’s been a lot of work done, mostly by Russian scientists; it’s all laid out in the book. By spontaneous processes of self-organisation when these clouds come together, they can generate emergence: intelligence, which then becomes more and more intelligent and keeps growing. If they are billions of years old, you can’t even begin to imagine how intelligent they are.

Dusty complex plasmas are a very special kind of plasma. To become intelligent, a plasma cloud has to have dust. If there isn’t any around that it can gather up, it’ll make its own. It’s self-sufficient in a way, but it does need energy coming in.

RS: You suggest, as many people have, there are forces that are very much interested in our awakening. Yet there seem to be all sorts of factors that impede or subvert these efforts toward illumination. It almost seems as if there’s one group out there that is trying to enlighten us and another group trying to put the lid on us. 

RT: I think there’s a war between good and evil going on throughout the universe, and we’re in the crossfire. Let’s face it: we live in a world today where authoritarianism is spreading rapidly everywhere, and we’ve got all these horrible people trying to enslave humanity.

I think that humans are of some very special interest to the higher entities. You can imagine there must be lots of other physical spaces in the universe whose beings are incredibly dull but very good. And then there will be others who are totally bad. We’re kind of a mixture.

I believe that we are bringing interest to the cosmic anthropologists because we’re a strange kind of experiment on the borderline between madness and creativity. We are uniquely able to be creative. Where does all this come from? At the same time, a lot of intensely creative people are pretty wild and woolly characters, and a bit crazy. There’s a thin line between genius and madness; a lot of the supermathematicians are autistic.

We’re not boring as a species, but we’re also loaded with psychopaths. I would say, at least 10 per cent of humanity is psychopathic; some people would say 20 per cent. We can never seem to quite get rid of all the psychopaths.

Now, this is all part of the cosmic anthropological study of us, you see. What the higher entities want to know is, can this work? In other words, can they somehow come up with a model of a human species that isn’t quite as crazy but still retains the creativity? Or do we have to be this crazy in order to be this creative?

We don’t know the answer to that question. I bet these entities don’t either because we’re a running experiment, and they are interested to see the outcome. They try not to interfere because it would disturb the experiment. They can’t come down and kill all the bad guys; that would perturb the experiment, and then it wouldn’t be an experiment anymore.

We have been studied without being interfered with. We have to be left to our own devices as long as possible until we get to the point where we might really all destroy ourselves in a sort of huge catastrophe; then there might be intervention.

But after all, even if the physical world were to be destroyed, as I’ve already said, we as bioplasma beings would still exist. But where would we go?

RS: I would like to ask a question raised by something Fred Hoyle said that you quoted in your book: that the scientific peer review process is merely a retardation of the advancement of knowledge. Could you expand on that a little?

RT: In my book, I give case histories of scientists who made crucial experiments but were prevented from publishing. One leading case is Fritz Zwicky, a Swiss astronomer who, in the late forties and all through the fifties, kept trying to publish his paper showing evidence that outer space was not empty. The establishment insisted that it was empty; it was a vacuum. So he couldn’t get his paper published for ten years.

Zwicky went to every physics and astrophysics journal in the world. They all said no. They refused to publish his evidence that outer space was not empty. The head of his own observatory wrote to the journal editors and said, “Whatever you do, don’t publish Zwicky’s paper.” Of course, this man behaved illegally, but he was never held to account.

Finally, Zwicky went to a biology journal and got it – an astronomical article – published; it was in a peer-reviewed biology journal. This meant that he could have offprints from the publication, which he could then send to all the astronomers. It took him ten years to get around the blockage.

This is an example of how the advancement of knowledge is held back, not just by the peer review process, which is almost continually abused, but by the knowledge control freaks. The establishment doesn’t want to be shown to be wrong because people would lose face and their reputations damaged. They want to always be correct, and they want to be the wise ones. If you come up with anything that goes against what they’ve already said, they’ll try and stop you, just for egotistical reasons.

The whole peer review process is to maintain the status quo of science and prevent advances and anything that challenges the establishment; that’s what it’s for. Fred said this because he could not get certain important discoveries published. It happens to everybody. My book is full of these terrible stories of suppression.

A lot of scientists, unfortunately, are human, with human faults, and egotism is one of the worst of them. My book is full of the sad stories of the heroes of plasma science, who have fought against all the odds to get us to where we are now, which is just the beginning.

Most people in the Western world, consciously or unconsciously, fluctuate between two polar orientations toward life – a religious vs. a secular outlook, which is driven by people’s perceptions of modern science. On the extreme end, religion tends to be close-minded and promotes an “us and them” mentality. Secular extremes promote a kind of smug, elitist intolerance that sees religion as the last refuge of the Neanderthals.

In this article, we will address a third paradigm, a spirituality compatible with the advanced new sciences.

Both religion and science are two branches of human endeavour that deal with the most basic questions of our existence – who we are, where did we come from, why are we here, and what is the nature of the world in which we live? Philosophy too deals with these questions, but philosophy is really a bridge or a by-product of these two more fundamental pillars of inquiry into the human condition. A sharp divide appears to exist in the way religion and science study and approach these questions so that the average person has to choose which is the correct view.

RELIGION VS. SCIENCE

How do you believe life started? How is it maintained? Was it all caused by random particle interactions that somehow created increasingly complex organisms and ultimately led to life? Or, do you believe that life originated through the actions of a deity? Perhaps you simply just don’t know and belong to the vast gray area of those who choose to ignore the tough questions and just forge ahead with life. But any way you cut it, your basic conscious or subconscious convictions about these matters influence the quality of your personal life and the character of our cultures, institutions, nations, and human conditions.

The belief that life is pure random chance as traditional science says has led to a certain secular, existentialist outlook on how you live and conduct yourself. It might cause conscious or subconscious feelings of futility and fear, both of which have consequences for physical and psychological well-being. Of course, believing in God doesn’t necessarily immunise you from problems, and people can certainly hold distorted, fearful notions of God. Misguided religious zealots often cause far more damage than morally responsible atheists. So, how can we proceed to a better understanding of life?

Ironically, fear is the common denominator between secularism and religion as practised in the Western world. It is the fear of not truly knowing at a gut level that we are part of a continuing whole as opposed to separated, transient specks that might permanently blip out of existence at any time. Fear and religion are commonly equated, but fear and science? 

One characteristic of traditional science is that it analyses parts like the physicians who specialise in hearts, eyes, and bones rather than looking at the body as an integrated whole. This approach is fragmented and thus promotes a fragmented, fearful view of life limited to what the five senses can detect, and the five senses cannot detect very much.

A way does exist to transcend the limitations of secular science and traditional religion. It has to do with the practice of acquiring a particular type of knowledge and experience that puts you in contact with a higher intelligence. Such an experience gives you a certainty that you exist within a larger framework than the visible, material world. It opens you to receiving information to help you perceive new patterns in the fabric of life. Such knowledge can guide you to evolve physically, emotionally, and spiritually. It can help you become independent of the beliefs and dogmas of others because it is not based on faith but on personal experience. 

The basis of this knowledge has support in both the new sciences and recovered ancient spiritual traditions. This is a Third Way, a spiritual path supported by quantum science leading to realms beyond the limitations of materialistic science and traditional religion. 

THE FORMS OF KNOWLEDGE

We can go about our daily business. We can think that politics, economics, wars, and social interactions are the things that most affect our lives, but that is a misperception. Everything begins with the individual. Remember this premise because we’ll come back to it again. 

All the greater movements of the world and societies occur because of beliefs that start in the mind of the individual. The mind of the individual is largely shaped by the collective, accumulated knowledge of human history. Knowledge, in turn, derives from three primary sources – raw sensory experience, logical reasoning as in science, and intuitive revelation, which is related to abstract or creative thinking. This form of knowledge is more tied to religious and spiritual expression.

Objective human knowledge came through practical observation of the world around us, first by empirical observation through the senses, and later by various forms of reasoning. But parallel to these objective forms of knowledge was a subjective source that was more abstract and intuitive. This allowed early humans to sense rhythms of the earth and experience things in such a way as to give rise to art and abstract concepts such as gods, spirits, and other representations of unseen forces. 

DISTINCTION BETWEEN SPIRITUALITY & RELIGION

Religion is derived from this subjective knowledge just as early science derived from the objective forms above. But here’s the catch. Because intuitive information is subjective, as it is passed from the sage or prophet to the masses, it is susceptible to distortion. Prophets spoke the heart of God but their followers started religions. Not having the prophet’s direct experience, the followers had to interpret. This left room for misunderstandings and the selfish agendas of mass mind thought. The spiritual knowledge revealed by the prophet became encased in dogmatic distortions, usually to gain power or control by one class of people over another.

This is the main distinction between spirituality and religion – true spirituality is a continuing personal journey and a personal experience while religion is more like being stuck on a faith in the dogmas and teachings of others.

OLD RELIGION VS. OLD SCIENCE

The simplistic traditional religious conception of God as a bearded old emperor on a throne in heaven dispensing stern justice for our sins or rewards for our good deeds was greatly eroded in the last century by the discoveries of materialist science. Unfortunately, this liberation from a limiting religious concept was replaced by an equally limiting scientific concept. 

Materialistic science developed over the past few centuries using a combination of rationalistic deduction and empirical observation of the properties of matter and material organisms. The central notion of materialist science is that creation, life, and reality arise from and can be explained by the interaction of physical particles. In other words, matter is the be-all and end-all of existence.

The view says that particle interaction gives rise to molecules that combine to form not only planets and physical laws but also simple organisms. These organisms continue combining in greater complexity, culminating in human beings. Consciousness is explained as a byproduct of the neural activity of a physical brain. One thing to note – in this scheme of creation, no adequate theory has explained how organic life evolved from inorganic particle matter. Scientists either ignore this issue or explain it away by dubious (and unscientific) suppositions.

This materialist picture of creation is a now basic orientation or worldview. It expresses itself in many forms, but three scientific theories, in particular, stand out as the cornerstones that shaped the modern human mind. 

Newton defined the laws of physics that described a mechanical nature of fixed material objects interacting in a solid, material universe. Descartes introduced a dualist philosophy that said mind and matter were separate and distinct phenomena. In biology, Darwin’s theories displaced the notion of a Creator with the concept of species evolving from lower forms in greater complexity with the chain reaching its peak in human beings.

RELIGION DISMANTLED

Suppressed by the Church for centuries, science lashed out on all fronts with a vengeance. Because creation, life, and reality could now apparently be explained by materially based processes, any notion of God, higher intelligence, or transcendent consciousness was taken out of the equation. God was dead. The materialist orientation spread to every form of human thought. 

The Bible was systematically deconstructed and relegated to amusing myth at best, harmful mind control at worst. And, ironically, the success of science in taking down religion was predicated on the fact that traditional Western religion was itself materially based despite purporting to be spiritual.

Orthodox Christianity misunderstood the archetypical, symbolic meaning of the Christian story. Instead of seeing Jesus’ advent as a seminal event of higher revelation, it concentrated on a virgin birth. Instead of understanding the meaning behind the profound spiritual wisdom he taught, it concentrated on physical miracles. Instead of perceiving the crucifixion as a metaphor for the way human fear and ego crucify the divine spark trying to awaken within us, it concentrated on the physical agony of his death as a blood sacrifice for our sins. Finally, instead of seeing the resurrection as the awakening of dormant divine wisdom within us while still alive, it perceived the resurrection as physical bodies rising from the grave.

This focus on literal and material interpretations left traditional religion right on the home field of materialist science. Dismantling the historicity and miracles of the Bible or, at least, casting grave doubt on them, was easy using scientific material rationalism. After all, you can mathematically quantify the apple falling from the tree, but how can you prove a formula for raising the dead?

THE POLARISATION & FRAGMENTATION OF HUMANITY

The shift from religion to science has had a profound effect on the psychology, feelings, and outlook of every person on the planet. We now live in a polarised world. The assault of science has driven many people back into a limiting, fundamentalist interpretation of God and religion, often with violent results. Islamic fundamentalism is largely a reaction to people’s religious comfort being torn out from under them by the onslaught of a modern, materialistic world outlook. 

In the middle of this polarisation is a large gray area of people who are confused and disheartened. Thanks to science they no longer believe in religion, but in facing life’s difficult problems they have an innate spiritual yearning that persists like a smouldering ember, and atheistic science can never satisfy that need. Traditional religion and traditional science have one other thing in common besides their materialistic outlooks on life – they have both done an efficient job of suppressing the human spirit.

THE THIRD WAY

Another path exists to explain creation, reality, and the human dilemma. It is a path of hope, for it unifies advanced sciences such as quantum physics with the core precepts of an ancient spiritual wisdom buried within every major religion on earth. As more people become aware of this relationship, it will transform our lives in ways that liberate us from literal religion and atheistic science. It will provide a viable framework to understand many of life’s mysteries and put some sense of control back in our lives. 

QUANTUM PHYSICS

Let’s begin with the scientific side of the ledger. Quantum physics is turning traditional science on its head the same way materialist science turned traditional religion upside down. 

Quantum physics demonstrates that material particles do not exist in and of themselves in a fundamental or natural state. What exists is really waves of light smeared across infinity, a cosmic menu of all possible outcomes or choices, if you will. Only when observed by a conscious observer does the possibility wave collapse into an observable point particle and become physical reality.

Other startling phenomena exist at the quantum level. Particles are able to communicate with one another instantaneously over vast distances in a non-local manner, meaning with no apparent connective medium or signal between them. Einstein called this process “spooky.” Particles can also make quantum leaps where an electron disappears at one level of energy or orbit and reappears at a higher level without any intervening movement. That would be like the earth disappearing and suddenly popping into the sun without passing through Mercury, Venus, or Mars.

Quantum physics is showing that the particles on which materialist science is based do not behave at all like the classic Newtonian model. It’s showing that mind or consciousness does not behave at all like Descartes’ dualist philosophy states. It’s shooting holes in Darwin’s version of human origins and creation. Most importantly, it indicates that creation was not a bottom-up process of particles- to molecules- to organisms- to brains- to consciousness. Rather it was a top-down process beginning with consciousness.

CONSCIOUSNESS

To understand the astounding and counterintuitive findings of quantum physics, comprehending the role of consciousness is essential. Let’s begin with a definition. Consciousness is awareness. Specifically, it is intelligent awareness capable of choice and direction. The quantum phenomena described above only make sense if consciousness is the primary source of reality. Quantum physics says that our reality begins with energetic light waves of possibility. These possibility waves only collapse into material particles upon observation. But, who is doing the observing? Both Max Planck, the founder of quantum physics, and the ancient spiritual texts tell us that a single Conscious Intelligent Mind or awareness is doing the observing. 

Then what is the nature of this Consciousness? From where does it arise? Does it have a material or non-material origin? Material science would claim that consciousness arises from matter as a function of the material brain. But quantum physics shows that only conscious observation collapses wave energy into matter, so how can the thing that is bringing matter into existence be created by it? This paradox rules out consciousness being created by matter.

Now let’s take a page from Descartes’ dualist philosophy. Say that mind (consciousness) and matter are separate and distinct dimensions that somehow interact with one another. So, consciousness is an immaterial force working with matter by some undefined means. Sounds reasonable, even a bit spiritual, right? But in order for matter to receive direction from an immaterial consciousness, there has to be a continual exchange of signals, of information, and that means energy. This can’t pass the laws of physics which state that energy in the universe is constant. The universe can’t be adding new stuff, so we have another paradox.

Now the Third Way comes into play. All paradoxes are eliminated and all quantum phenomena explained if we see consciousness as the source of all reality. It is the matrix or energy net that encompasses everything observable and unobservable. So consciousness is both particle and wave, matter and energy, observer and the thing observed. This means that when consciousness chooses and collapses a possibility into reality, it chooses from within itself, not from some outside immaterial dimension, hence no paradox. This explains how particles far removed in space instantly communicate with one another. They’re both the same energy manifesting at different points. It explains quantum leaps as an instant transfer of Universal Mind’s focus from one point to another, the way a man might look at a new car and then suddenly fixate on a beautiful woman.

We can further refine the operations of consciousness in this manner – Consciousness with a capital “C” is the fundamental intelligent energy (call it God, higher intelligence etc.). This Consciousness manifests itself as different points of consciousness with a lower case “c.” That would be you and me and every self-aware being. In quantum scientific terms, capital “C” and small “c” would be called non-ordinary and ordinary consciousness respectively. Big “C” Consciousness is the fundamental light or energy which, like using multiple projectors, projects all reality through us small “c’s.” Collectively, we participate as the aware observers who draw forth material reality from the quantum light wave. We see that the New Age concept of co-creation does have a basis in quantum theory.

THE SPIRITUAL WISDOM TRADITION

The astonishing knowledge quantum physics brings about creation, life, and reality was revealed thousands of years ago by the threads of a universal spiritual tradition, the wisdom of which permeated every major religion or philosophy, pagan and modern. One branch of this tradition, in particular, was striking in its many parallels to modern science. It was called Gnosticism. Listed below are some of its key beliefs:

• God is One, encompassing Energy, Mind, and Matter
• The One appears as many
• The kingdom is within you, the spark of the divine is within you
• You are made in the image of God
• As it is above, so it is below
• Do unto others as you would do unto yourself
• God is everything, everything is God.

All these wisdom teachings were echoing quantum theory thousands of years ago in the non-technical languages of their day saying that every single thing in creation proceeds from conscious intelligence, and we as human beings are part of that conscious intelligent awareness.

We’ll limit the discussion of the ancient tradition to three key precepts:

God is Consciousness, the one and only energy that permeates all reality seen and unseen.

Light is the vehicle by which this Consciousness expresses itself. Light is intelligent energy and it carries directive information.

This Consciousness divided itself into many points of consciousness as an outflowing of its light essence.

We saw above how consciousness is the only thing that explains the paradoxical and strange behaviour of the quantum world that makes up our physical reality. Einstein’s famous formula E=MC² shows that matter and light are interchangeable forms, that is, matter comes from light and resolves back into light. This is a bookend proof of the findings in quantum physics that particles do not occur at the most fundamental levels of reality, only waves of light exist. At some point owing to the actions of consciousness, these light waves crystallise into particle matter. Astounding but true.

Quantum physics has also confirmed that light contains intelligent information. It’s by the action of light photons (pulsations of light) that matter combines into the unique forms that make up the variety of objects we see in the world. Only something containing intelligence can make such distinctions, only something containing information can create organised forms the way DNA contains the exact information to form our bodies.

Taken collectively, these findings of modern physics do nothing but reaffirm the three spiritual principles above.

TRADITIONAL SCIENCE & RELIGION REVISED

The limitations of traditional religion and science may now be superseded by a liberating new paradigm. I say superseded, not trashed, bashed, or discarded, for this assumes there is nothing good or redeemable in science and religion, and that’s just not so. Let’s take the three pillars of traditional science, Newton, Descartes, and Darwin. Quantum physics exposes their theories as incomplete or incorrect in some of their applications and conclusions. That’s not to say they are categorically wrong. They explain certain functions accurately, but they can’t explain the whole of which they are a part.

Newtonian physics works well in explaining certain functions of the observable world, but it can’t account for effects under Einstein’s relativity or the sub-atomic world, and it can’t come close to explaining the fundamental operations of matter and consciousness. Therefore, its view of a determined universe as a giant machine is incorrect. Descartes’ dualism seems to define a working relationship between mind and matter for day-to-day purposes, but it is fundamentally incorrect in missing the true underlying unity of the two. Darwin’s theory only explains evolution within species. It never explains the creation or origin of life. It doesn’t even demonstrate how one species evolves into another, like apes into humans, except as an article of faith. The fossil record supports a more quantum leap view, that is, species like human beings came about quite suddenly upon acquiring consciousness.

The Third Way poses two big course corrections in traditional science and religion. First is the limited and damaging view of materialistic science that life derives from matter instead of matter deriving from consciousness. Second is the traditional religious view that humanity is a separated creation of God as opposed to being a projection of the divine consciousness itself in material form. 

THE PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS OF THE THIRD WAY

Recognising the fact that consciousness creates everything and that we are all part of that consciousness means, as Jesus said, the kingdom is within. We are not separated from the divine force, we are a projection of it and we, in turn, can truly be co-creators of our reality. We cannot do this out of our ordinary consciousness, however. We must align with our non-ordinary Higher Consciousness through meditation or other practices, but this is readily achievable for all.

Achieving this puts a measure of control into our seemingly random lives. Once we learn the principles of how higher intelligence works, we begin to focus on those things that have value to us, and we can even develop a notion of what it is we should truly value. We find our lives working better and old, negative patterns break up. We’re incentivised to become more spiritually responsible and aware because we understand the payoff is putting the power of the universe on our side. We can replace the moral values of religion, already eroded by traditional science, with a higher spiritual concept of wholeness so it becomes our own self-interest not to hurt others because we see how we ultimately hurt ourselves.

One of the most life-altering experiences is having a direct communication with higher intelligence and receiving information that proves out in the “real” world. Some people become medical intuitives; others develop intuition that helps their financial or life decisions. The applications are many. When we experience the operation of this information in our lives as it translates from the psychic into the material realm, we have passed beyond faith in the unseen (religion) and graduated to knowledge that the unseen is the true underlying reality (spirituality). 

Few people understand the real meaning of quantum physics to date, fewer still understand the hidden spiritual wisdom of the past. Once these concepts go mainstream, they will transform our world and exponentially propel the evolution of our consciousness. If you doubt this statement, consider this – a few hundred years ago, the Church had its grip around the neck of the truth. Science gradually bled through this iron curtain. In our lifetime, we saw the accelerated erosion of such fear-based concepts as a judgmental biblical God. Traditional science, for better or worse, has shaped the basic world outlook of most people today. But science replaced the old concept of God with an empty shell of chance occurrences – life, the great accident – which is not such a great life after all. We went from the frying pan into the fire.

But a new genie is now out of the bottle. It’s taking the form of quantum physics echoed by rediscovered ancient Gospels shedding light on a universal wisdom tradition. It provides a truer picture of creation, reality, and of our human origin and purpose. It’s an empowering message that transcends the limitations of traditional religion and the dulling atheism of materialistic science. It’s taking time to filter into the mass mind awareness, but when it catches on, we’ll see a quantum leap in all aspects of human activity as we discard the yokes of our past religious and scientific beliefs.

Charles Sanders Peirce, a pioneer of the modern scientific empirical method, wisely said that the conclusions of science are always tentative. The scientific method should be self-corrective, discarding outdated knowledge to make way for new discoveries. By continued application of this method, science can detect and correct its own mistakes, and thus eventually lead to the discovery of truth. Many scientists have forgotten this wisdom. They’ve fallen into a religious-like orthodoxy of static, dogmatic beliefs that stifle alternative information such as what has been presented in this article. 

What a great discovery to realise that the God of quantum physics is actually the God of the ancient mystics come to reclaim a place in our consciousness. This merged knowledge can dispel the limiting errors of our previous works, and that is evolution in action, not stagnation in ignorance. Though we do not have the final insight on these matters, I fervently believe the closest we will come to discovering universal truth is the point where the objective world of science intersects with the subjective world of mystic spirituality.

As the world’s elite and powerful meet every year in private to discuss the many plans and agendas they have to control our lives, from what we eat to who owns our bodies to how we spend our money, it’s easy to fall into a sense of total disempowerment, of feeling as though we no longer have choices, individuality, or sovereignty because other far more wealthy and influential people are pulling the puppet strings of humanity. We are told we are “bottom feeders” and “useless eaters” who don’t have the brains to decide our own destinies, and that one day we will be made obsolete thanks to transhumanism. 

Yet there is a movement that began back in the early 1900s, based upon ancient wisdom teachings thought about in new ways, that tells us this is not true. The New Thought Movement and its teachings and principles are finding a new home in the hearts, minds, and souls of those who know they were not meant to be puppets under someone else’s control. They are spiritual beings having human experiences, sparks of divine intelligence that bow to no external forces or influences, directly linked to the infinite intelligence of the Universe and are, ultimately, co-creators of their own lives.

Over the last few years, we have all become aware of the agendas of the ultra-rich and powerful, of organisations like the Bilderberg Group and the World Economic Forum, and Big Pharma and the complicit mainstream media that lie to us and deceive us into pushing their chosen narrative. It has left many of us reeling for solid ground physically, mentally, and spiritually as we watch loved ones fall prey to propaganda and brainwashing. They turned the truth on its head, telling us up is down, and altering science to fit their woke agenda.

We have watched as our spiritual lives have been sapped of strength as we questioned those we thought were on our side, doctors and researchers who sold their souls to Big Pharma, celebrities that pushed gender mutilation and the belief that men can give birth and menstruate. Media pundits tell us to look the other way when thousands drop dead of “no apparent cause” because they’ve been told to keep the truth from us about vaccine injuries and deaths.

The whole world has been turned upside down and we have lost our footing.

Focusing on these externals has created a sense of fear and anxiety that is unprecedented in recent times, but there is a great truth the elites don’t want us to remember and will do all they can to hide it from us. A truth with ancient roots and a more modern view that tells us we are way more in control than we could ever imagine. A truth that reminds us real power comes not from some arrogant billionaire with a God complex or some corporation that benefits from illness and death. Real power comes from within each and every one of us, if only we would stop looking for it in all the wrong places.

What Is New Thought?

The name is a bit deceiving because New Thought has been around for well over a century. Not to be confused with New Age, New Thought is a spiritual and philosophical movement with roots in many religions and metaphysical teachings. It is ancient wisdom thought about in new ways as most of its ideas, core principles, and teachings are rooted in everything from Christianity to Buddhism. William James referred to as “the Religion of Healthy-Mindedness” and wrote about the movement in his book, Varieties of Religious Experience, alluding to the emphasis on the power of the mind and our thoughts.

New Thought focuses on using the power of the mind to heal, create reality, and prosper in the world because all is mind and all begins in thought. The “founding father” of the movement was Phineas Parkhurst Quimby (1802–1866), an American clockmaker who was also a mentalist and student of mesmerism. Quimby suffered from tuberculosis as a youth, which had no cure, and set about to experiment with his own ideas. He was intrigued by the mind’s ability to control and affect his own pain and thus, the body, and even claimed to use his mind methods to cure his TB.

Mesmerised

Quimby was a follower and devotee of the teachings of Charles Poyen, who came from France to the United States to lecture on “mesmerism,” a form of hypnotism created by German doctor Franz Mesmer in the 18^th century which claimed the presence of an invisible natural force possessed by all living things, including humans, animals, and vegetables, and that this force could serve as an attractor, as in animal magnetism. Quimby also followed the teachings of other mesmerists visiting the United States from Europe and began to develop his own practice of working with ill patients, many of whom claimed he cured them.

He was called a quack and fraud by those who did not understand his ideas, but his work served as the foundation of New Thought – how the mind can cure, or harm, by the use of this invisible and mesmerising force. 

Mental Sciences 

According to an article on NewThoughtWisdom.com, “New Thought also helped guide a variety of social changes throughout the 19^th, 20^th, and into the 21^st centuries. New Thought directly influenced the growing movement of ‘Mental Sciences’ of the mid-19^th century, which would later become the New Thought Movement. The mental-healing movement was a protest against old beliefs and methods, particularly the old-school medical practice and the old theology of the time.” 

Quimby’s belief that one could cure themself of disease by using their own mind was at the forefront of a revolution in how we thought about illness and suggested strongly that we had more control than even doctors or pills and surgeries.

The ‘Mental Sciences’ are also rooted in the work of Warren Felt Evans who became a student of the movement in 1863 after seeking healing from Quimby. His great achievement was being the first to write about the New Thought healing methods as taught and practised by Quimby. His first book was published six years after Quimby died.

The New Thought movement may have originated in the United States, but it also had some roots in England, where the term “Higher Thought” was used instead of “Mental Sciences.” New Thought ideas spread via lectures, books, magazines, and leaflets in the early days. It was never intended to be a formal or organised religion. New Thought groups and churches were non-judgmental and open to all, unlike more traditional religions with rules, doctrines, and dogma.

Eventually, there arose three major branches within the movement that still exist today:

• Religious Science/Science of Mind 
• Church of Divine Science
• Unity Church/Unity Christianity

Religious Science was founded by Ernest Holmes (1877–1960) who wrote the seminal textbook, The Science of Mind. Holmes was heavily influenced by other New Thought pioneers such as Judge Thomas Troward, a founder of Mental Science, and literary legend Ralph Waldo Emerson, as well as the work of Emma Curtis Hopkins, who was often described as the New Thought “teacher of teachers” because of her influence on the movement. 

Religious Science is a spiritual system based on the idea that all religions claim the same divine truth. Holmes wrote, “The varying faiths of mankind are unnumbered, but the primal faith of the race is today, as of old, the One Faith; an instructive reliance upon the Unseen, which we have learned to call God.” The teachings of Religious Science, summed up in The Science of Mind, claimed people could realise their true power and individual goals by believing the Universe was filled with divine intelligence, purpose, and order and that they could access that intelligence within, through the power of their minds and alignment of their thoughts. 

The Church of Divine Science originated in San Francisco in the 1880s under Malinda Cramer (1844–1906). She and her husband Frank created the Home College of Spiritual Science in March 1888. Cramer later changed the name to the Home College of Divine Science. According to Divinescience.org, divine science teaches “that the fullness of Spirit is forever pouring Itself through the mind of man, limited only by the way man thinks and feels about life in general and about certain conditions and situations in particular. Therefore, all change begins as an activity in mind and through the law of cause-and-effect mind manifests as a personal experience.” 

Unity Church or Unity was founded by Charles (1854–1948) and Myrtle Fillmore (1845–1931) in 1889, with roots in Transcendentalism. Unity describes itself as “for people who might call themselves spiritual but not religious” and publishes a popular devotional publication called Daily Word. Unity has more of a Christian basis but without the dogma and doctrine. Unitychurch.org describes “a philosophy of life that emphasises a positive approach to Christianity and daily living and is based on the principles of Truth taught and exemplified by Jesus the Christ. We welcome all people regardless of religious background and serve their spiritual needs through prayer, education, publishing and being of loving service.”

All were incorporated into the International New Thought Alliance (www.newthoughtalliance.org), which provides educational information as a gathering place (now online) for those who follow the principles and practices.

Key Principles

The principles of New Thought, no matter what group or branch, are as follows:

• Infinite intelligence, or God, is omnipotent and omnipresent.
• Spirit is the Ultimate Reality.
• True human self-hood is divine.
• Disease has a mental origin.
• Divine thought has power for good.
• Right thinking can heal.
• There is power in prayer, meditation, and positive thinking.

New Thought regards God as the Source of all, infinite intelligence that is everywhere, and that divine thought is a force for good in the world. God, or this infinite intelligence, exists within and yet is the entirety of the Universe itself, and there are metaphysical laws that govern the spiritual universe just as scientific laws govern the physical universe. We can use these metaphysical laws to consciously create our life experiences.

According to NewThoughtWisdom.com, “New Thought teaches that everything begins in the mind, and that events in the ‘outer’ world reflect the atmosphere of the ‘inner’ world: the macrocosm of human collective consciousness is regarded as inseparable from the microcosm of individual thoughts, attitudes, and beliefs. Through a shift in consciousness, conditions can be altered – for the individual and thus for the collective.”

In other words, as the late modern New Thought teacher/author Dr Wayne Dyer put it, “If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.” Neuroscience tells us that our brains will look for evidence of what we expect and believe. We are pretty much what we think about all day long, as are our experiences.

These concepts can be traced to the more mystical teachings and philosophies of the ancient Greek, Roman, Egyptian, Taoist, Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Vedic, and Muslim cultures, emphasising the interaction between the mind/thought and consciousness and its effects in the external world outside of the human mind. Unlike many religious teachings, there is no need for a middleman, an intercessor, a Church leader, a dogmatic doctrine, or a set of fixed rules. 

What a dangerous concept in these trying times when we feel so out of control because of tyrannical entities such as the World Economic Forum, the UN, Big Pharma, and our government leaders seeking to take away every remaining freedom we have. If we were to all wake-up and realise we have this divine power within us and that we alone control our minds, thoughts, and beliefs, those who seek to control us and make money off of our backs would be… powerless. This is why a new revolution of New Thought principles and teachings can literally change the world.

But first, we must change ourselves individually. We must achieve right thinking and learn to focus our thoughts and attention on what we want to create, not what we don’t want. New Thought teaches us that we are all sparks of divinity and that, as stated in the Divine Science Statement of Being, “God is all, both invisible and visible. One Presence, One Mind, One Power is all. This One that is Perfect Life, Perfect Love and Perfect Substance.” We are also told that “the transcendence and immanence of God is manifest in all created things.” Imagine knowing that we are a part of this divine powerhouse that takes invisible, unformed substance and brings it into form. Who would need institutions and corporations to create prosperity? Who would need the constant intervention and meddling of medical authorities and Big Pharma when we can learn to heal our own bodies via the power of our minds?

New Thought reminds us that there is visible and invisible, absolute and relative, universal and individual and that it is all God, and we are a part of this. God is within us. Just as Christians are told the Kingdom of Heaven is not some external place, but in us and through us and all around us.

New Thought is called a process that evolves with each individual. Unlike traditional religions, New Thought remains “new” by embracing insights, discoveries, and levels of consciousness that allow the individual and the collective to continue to “become” more.

How Can Evil Exist if God is All Good?

As millions of people die from vaccine injuries, COVID-19, crime, poverty and other causes, one might ask how New Thought views evil. In “Toward the Prophetic: A New Direction in the Practice of New Thought” by independent scholar Liza J. Rankow for Religion Online, God is not personified but regarded as “an Eternal Principle that appears as Law, Being, Mind, Spirit, the Cause and Source of All.” 

Rankow explains that the Christian doctrine of God as good is contrasted with “some independently existent evil, in a dualistic context (whether or not that evil is personified as the devil or Satan). New Thought, however, believes in ultimate oneness and that God is all there is, and “evil is regarded not as a fundamental part of the universal order, but as the byproduct of a human consciousness of separation.” Thus it is this sense of separation that is at the root of all evil and despair.

We are, therefore, individualised expressions of and one with the Life of God, spiritual beings in human incarnation. We can choose good or evil within that context and Life will respond to the force and focus of our thoughts. To reach our greatest soul development and for the good of the collective soul, it behoves us to choose good. This was a central teaching of Jesus Christ and other great wisdom teachers who believed in The Golden Rule.

The Power Is Us

Those who seek to suppress, control, or rule over us, whether individuals or institutions, know that many of us have lost our connection to this truth – that we are divine co-creators, that we have the power within to change our thoughts and minds and therefore our external experiences, and that no one can take away the sovereignty of our minds and freedom of our thoughts. They know we have little to no spiritual life because they have forced us into a relentless fear-based survival mode. 

As more of us awaken to these New Thought teachings, their power over us will diminish and vanish. We will no longer be victims of people, things, or situations outside us. We will step into our true nature, one they will do anything to keep from us.

We can then apply the principles of universal and divine oneness of the individual to the greater social condition, creating a profound new understanding of how we interact with others and the Earth itself. If we understand that the essence of all life is unified with Source, and we are all of that Source, then there is no “we” and “them” and only all of us, and harming one harms all. Individual transformation leads to the transformation of the entirety of life itself. The power begins with each of us. 

What a truly revolutionary act it is today, amidst censorship and banning and suppression of truth, to learn to reclaim our inner power, our divine connection, and our ability to use our minds to create the lives we desire and to control our thoughts, our lives, and our destinies. This is the gift of New Thought.

When, at fifty-nine I finally returned, after twenty years, to clinical psychiatry, I had no idea that I was on the verge of an inconceivably strange adventure. Treating patients by talking to troublesome earthbound spirits could not have been further from my thoughts. And yet, three years later, I was doing just that. My decision to write a book on survival after physical death came out of my work with earthbound spirits and their connection to the dying process.

To clarify the situation, I’ll give a brief explanation of what, to my knowledge, happens at death, when the soul passes for further development to the Light, the entrance to the spirit world.

It fits what souls report to therapists during spirit release. Mediums may receive similar information. This transition is not invariable. If the soul has no concept of survival or if death is traumatic and unexpected, the Light may not be visible, and attachment may occur to someone at the scene.

Sometimes attachment occurs by design. Addiction to alcohol, drugs, some otherworldly activity, or an intense relationship with another person can result in a soul remaining earthbound by intention. This may become a parasitic connection that is difficult to break.

A soul may also be stranded in some familiar location and produce effects, such as haunting, or it may attach to another living individual, either knowingly or unknowingly. Such a spirit may move on of its own accord, but there may be a need for release.

The practice of spirit release – or exorcism, as it is called when part of a religious practice – goes back thousands of years and continues to be used by religions worldwide. In Brazil, Spiritism, founded by Allan Kardec, born Hyppolite Rivail, has many hospitals and thousands of treatment centres, where spirit release by mediums is a main feature of the treatment. There are many other regions, especially in India and Africa, where it is an important part of the social fabric for practitioners of spirit release using local techniques to remove harmful spirits induced as curses (spirit interference).

My personal knowledge and experience concerns spirit attachment in the industrialised Western world, where the condition, although prevalent, is rarely acknowledged. Except for its use by mediums who need spirit guides for their work, attachment is usually an unwished-for condition in which spirits interfere with the healthy functioning of individuals. I have been concerned mostly with the earthbound souls of those who have died. Some nonhuman spirits (entities) or demonic spirits can also cause problems.

How does one make a diagnosis of spirit attachment in such cases? Since most patients are ignorant of the condition, the most important step is for them to become aware that such a condition may be present.

Any of the following symptoms may manifest: low energy level, character shifts or mood swings, impulsive behaviour, memory gaps, poor concentration, sudden onset of anxiety or depression, abuse of alcohol or drugs, hearing a negative inner voice.

It is very rare for attached spirits to take full control, but such cases have been described. Nearly always, the intrusion shows only moderate effects, as in my patient, Pete who you will shortly be meeting.

The concept of spirit interference raises many questions, such as how do spirits gain entry, and how can we protect ourselves against these secret intruders? While there is no doubt that some people are far more open to spirit interference than others, those who lead healthy lives, without extremes of abuse or indulgence, are the least likely to be troubled.

Attached spirits should be encouraged to go to the Light. Even if not harmful, they may be doorways for harmful spirits to enter. Dealing with them requires special skill.

To assist the transition, I ask for the help of a deceased relative of the patient or, if none is apparent, a spirit guide. Such help is often perceived by the patient and leads to effective release. Remote spirit release may be used by therapists with psychic abilities. They scan clients for attached spirits and clear them with or without the aid of spirit guides.

Talking to inner voices is not part of regular psychiatric practice, and I need scarcely say that it did not feature in my formal training. It was only after my meeting with Lance Trendall, the hypnotist whom I mention in the introduction to Psychiatry and the Spirit World, and subsequent training in hypnosis and spirit release, that this door opened for me.

I used it first with my nonpsychotic patients at Fairfield Hospital, especially those who had treatment-resistant depressive and anxiety states. Most of them were keen to use hypnosis and glad of an opportunity to change from the usual medication.

Without mentioning the possibility of attached spirits, I would have them, while in hypnosis, look into an imaginary mirror or imagine being filled with light and look for shadowy areas. I would then ask, “If that area could make a noise (or speak) what might it say?” A response would usually lead to a verbal exchange, with the possibility of exploring the history of an attached spirit. However, in the absence of a verbal response, it was often possible to communicate by finger signals.

I would ask the spirit if it could relate its own experience of physical death, and why it had joined the patient. Attached spirits usually have their own problems that need to be resolved. Sometimes a spirit has a past-life connection to the patient that needs to be explored before a release can occur.

Physical Symptoms Resulting from Spirit Attachment

Innumerable hospital investigations had failed to reveal the cause of Pete’s trouble. He worked as a senior manager and professional trainer and had a very successful career. Pete came to me as a last resort after being offered a marvellous job opportunity abroad. It was a chance that, at fifty, he couldn’t afford to lose.

Before he came, e-mails from both husband and wife had delivered a daunting catalogue of complaints: abdominal pain, joint pains, retching and diarrhea, wide fluctuations in temperature, and periods of severe prostration. Life had become a misery. Had it not been for a wonderfully sustaining and rich marital relationship, he might not have survived.

There were two important clues to the cause of the problem. One had come to light a year before when, during hypnotic regression, Pete had experienced a life in Tibet. As a boy, while being schooled to be a lama, he had been bayoneted to death by a Chinese soldier.

The other clue was his conviction of being possessed. How this came about he could not say. He had first felt it after the death of his mother years before. In Pete’s words, “This thing lives in my descending colon. This is its lair. I can show you the exact place. It can be small or large. When it’s really at rest it’s about the size of a big marble. When it’s fully active it penetrates and permeates my entire body, including my brain. At its worst I feel that it’s killing me by draining all my energy and by consuming my cells and preventing my mind from functioning. It is almost never absent.”

I had Pete relax through visualisation and imagine his body filled with light. He described “a dark, triangular kind of shape” on the left side of the abdomen. What follows in the next account is the verbatim dialogue between me, Pete, and the entity speaking through Pete:

Alan: If it could make a noise, what noise would it make?

Pete: Constant, intense; a raging scream.

Alan: And if that scream could find words, what words would come?

Pete: Hatred.

[A nonhuman entity then identifies itself as Askinra; in appearance, it’s “like a dark flame.”]

Askinra (speaking through Pete): I shouldn’t be in here. I feel trapped like this.

[Askinra becomes aware of voices and light.]

Angels: Come back! Come out!

[Askinra feels blocked.]

Askinra: I can only come through him.

Alan: Tell me, Askinra, what effect are you having on Pete?

Askinra: I’m destroying him. If I destroy him then I can be free.

Alan: Become aware of the angels that are calling your name and tell me what you see.

Askinra: It is as if a pathway goes up through the heart, to the top of the head.

Alan: And where does it lead beyond the head?

Askinra: Into another place that’s very different from this one. It is outside this reality. It’s the place I’m trying to go, but I can’t get there, I can’t get through. Every time I try to get out, I can’t get through.

Alan: At what point are you stopped, Askinra? Try and get through and tell me what your experience is.

Askinra: It’s like a closed door… like something that’s locked.

Alan: Describe the closed door.

Askinra: It’s round and white, like bone.

Alan: Askinra, speak to the closed door that’s round and white, like bone. Ask the closed door, “May I come through?” How does it respond?

Askinra: No.

Alan: Ask the closed door, “What must I do, so that you will open for me?”

Askinra: Die!

Alan: Askinra, are you telling me that you are able to die? You are an immortal spirit, Askinra, how can you die?

Askinra: That’s what the door is for; it’s for the time of death.

[This path of inquiry seemed to be blocked. I decide on another approach.]

Alan: Askinra, tell me, how old was Pete when you joined him?

Askinra: Twelve.

[Askinra entered at the time of the fatal bayonet wound, during the Chinese invasion of Tibet when Pete was twelve in that incarnation, preparing to become a lama. It seems that Askinra was there and was taken by surprise.]

Askinra: Hatred pushes me in there and fixes me in there.

[Pete gives permission for me to speak to the soldier.]

Alan: I’m speaking to the soldier who is putting the bayonet into this boy of twelve, who feels so much hatred. You, the soldier, what do you have to say? You can speak to me. You’re feeling anger, aren’t you? What do you say to the little boy?

Soldier: You have to be destroyed!

Alan: And you hate this boy.

Soldier: I hate everything he stands for.

[The soldier, who on questioning reveals that his name is Chen Ling, now regrets his action. With angelic help, Chen Ling removes his anger from the bayonet thrust. As an indication of his regret, Chen Ling gives the boy a tiny pearl. Askinra is now able to pass through the door in the head, which opens onto a place of mountains and light. Spirit guides are requested. The hand of the guide feels “like a cool stream.”]

Askinra: Sorry, I never meant to be there. Come and find me in the new place.

Afterward, Pete experienced some parting spasms in the left abdomen, but felt much lighter. Healing spirits were called in to cleanse and heal the whole subtle energy system, leaving Pete feeling good.

A month later, Pete described the experience: “The physical symptoms have gone. It was just as distinct as if you were carrying something and it weighed a certain amount and it had a certain texture and a certain feeling to it and that thing was removed from you. With that thing out of the way, I’m free to think and feel and to be aware in ways that I wasn’t before. It has made a huge difference.”

At a ten-year follow-up Pete wrote the following:

The immediate result of Alan’s work with me was that I was instantly relieved of a wide range of intensely debilitating physical symptoms upon which all other approaches, both “allopathic” and “alternative” had been ineffective. My mental and emotional stance also changed for the better. I had more clarity and felt more contented and happy with my present circumstances and substantially more positive about the future. It is not the case that everything in my life was perfect after this event, or that I never suffered again from either physical illness or emotional upset, but it is for me a fact that this was one of the major turning points in my life and that, in many ways, I never looked back. My experience was, essentially, that of being freed from “something” that had trapped me in a limited and painful version of my Self. Since then, my life and work have been successful in a number of ways that I did not, previously, anticipate.

The case of Askinra is a white crow,* waiting to be acknowledged. And it was a beautiful crow, wasn’t it? I loved the gift of the small pearl and the hand of the guide feeling “like a cool stream,” and Askinra’s invitation to Pete to come and find him in the new place. “Caw!”

* Professor William James was convinced that an unseen world existed and gave much thought to how it could best be demonstrated. Here is his much-quoted statement: “If you wish to upset the law that all crows are black, it is enough if you prove one single crow to be white.”

My take on what the professor meant is this: white crows are rare, and so are, to sceptical scientists, anomalous events. We only need to prove the existence of a single white crow (or anomalous event) to disprove the black crow “law.”
